Thanks to Colin Flahive for providing us with video from the May 18 benefit for victims of the Wenchuan earthquake. The evening of music by Kunming-based performers raised 10,987 yuan, which was donated to the Chinese Red Cross.
The above video features that evening's performance by Co Op Sol (邪作社) – video footage of performances by Synthatron, Kris Ariel and Cat and Colin are also available for viewing on YouTube.
Despite being held on a rainy Sunday evening with little notice, last night's Wenchuan earthquake benefit at Speakeasy Bar succeeded in raising 10,987 yuan (see above image) for the Chinese Red Cross and its efforts in the disaster zone.
GoKunming would like to thank Speakeasy Bar for co-organizing and hosting the event – we also thank the talented musicians who gave their talents and efforts to the cause: Zhu Xiaolong, Eddie, Nicole, JP, Nevada Lundemo, Kat and Colin, Fang band, Synthatron, Co Op Sol, Li Fan and People's Rhythm. Special thanks also to Kris Ariel, who did double duty as a host of the event and a performer. We are also grateful to the Red Cross representatives who stayed on until late in the evening.
Most importantly, GoKunming would like to thank everyone who showed up and donated what they could to assist in the recovery effort in Sichuan. Further donations to the Red Cross can be made here. For those that like to spread their donations around, the Chengdu Bookworm has outlined some very concrete needs of the recovery effort. See comments (below) for more.
Today at 2:28 the government is asking people to fall silent as car, train and ship horns as well as air raid sirens sound in memory of the earthquake, which took place at 2:28 one week ago today.
The Wenchuan earthquake, which China has recently revised to an 8.0 magnitude tremor, has killed an estimated 50,000 people, with thousands still missing beneath rubble.
A diverse and talented collection of local musicians will be donating their time and talents tonight at Speakeasy Bar to assist in the Wenchuan earthquake relief effort, with all proceeds from the 20-yuan admission fee to be donated to the Chinese Red Cross.
The show starts at 8:00 pm and is co-organized by Speakeasy Bar and GoKunming. A representative of the Chinese Red Cross will be visiting the benefit at 10:30 to collect the door takings. Speakeasy Bar will also donate 30% of the bar takings from the evening.
Performers scheduled to appear tonight include: Co Op Sol, Zhu Xiaolong, JP, Li Fan, People's Rhythm, Nevada Lundemo, Kat & Colin, Synthatron and Kris Ariel. The 20-yuan admission fee includes one complimentary bottle of Yanjing beer.
GoKunming thanks Speakeasy Bar and tonight's performers for their help in organizing this event with just a few days' notice. We hope that any of our readers who have yet to contribute to the earthquake recovery effort come by to check out some good music for a good cause.
With more than 20 million people affected by Monday's Wenchuan earthquake, an official death count of 15,000 and 40,000 still missing, the next few days are likely to see a jump in the number of dead. As the focus of relief efforts shifts from saving lives to clearing rubble and rebuilding what once were towns and cities, the economic toll of the quake is expected to be massive.
With Kunming's proximity to Sichuan and its large Sichuanese population, there are many local residents concerned about how to help their neighbors to the north. Earlier this week we posted information on how to contribute to the Chinese Red Cross - also this Sunday night Speakeasy Bar and GoKunming are co-organizing a night of music to benefit the Red Cross' efforts in Sichuan.
Beginning at 8:30 pm, the earthquake benefit show at Speakeasy Bar will feature a diverse sampling of Kunming's local music scene, including Co Op Sol, Zhu Xiaolong, JP, Li Fan, People's Rhythm, Synthatron and DJ Kris, with more acts likely to be added in the next couple of days. Admission to the show is a 20 yuan donation, which includes a complimentary bottle of Yanjing Beer.
All takings at the door – plus 30 percent of the takings at the bar – will be donated to the Red Cross, which has agreed to send a representative to the show. Additional donations are also welcome.
GoKunming thanks Speakeasy Bar and all the performers donating their time and talents to this worthy cause.
Update: Nevada Lundemo has been added to the evening's lineup
The second installment of the Kunming Outdoor Music Festival took place over the weekend in Taiping Town outside of Kunming - this time featuring two days of music from bands based in Kunming and Dali. This edition of the festival attracted around 600 people and featured a greater variety of performers than the last - plus perfect weather for taking in music under the stars.
Many of the performers from the first edition of the festival last November made it back to perform on Friday and Saturday nights, including organizers Gouride (狗日的), Tribal Moons, Heiyu (黑宇), and No Answer (打死我也不说).
No Answer, whose Chinese name means 'beat me to death and I still won't talk', was arguably the most improved band since the last festival – owing primarily to the addition of vocalist Bai Cai, whose energetic stage presence was able to get the audience more involved than at the band's previous shows (see above image). Drummer Yang Yang also put in a solid performance, confirming her status as one of the more talented young drummers in the Kunming music scene.
Perhaps the biggest surprise at the festival was the opening night performance by the rock/reggae hybrid Made in Dali, who were the consensus favorite among people who attended the festival both evenings.
There was a sizeable military presence at the festival, with dozens of (officially) off-duty soldiers checking out the variety of musical offerings under a nearly full moon. On Saturday night during an 11 pm set by Co Op Sol (邪作社), formerly known as Rap Republic, two military personnel carriers drove into the festival, lights flashing and sirens blaring.
Some of the audience was slightly confused when a few dozen soldiers quickly assembled at the rear of the seating area. Things quickly returned to normal, however, after it became apparent that the soldiers seemed more interested in watching the show than interrupting...好玩嘎!
English movie and discussion at Chicago Coffee Chicago Coffee which also has Monday Chinese corners and Tuesday English corners, will host its weekly English movie and discussion at 7pm. Admission is free with any purchase – call 5389288 for movie details.

With the success of the first Kunming Outdoor Music Festival (昆明露天音乐节) last November, the event's organizers are bringing the all-day – and most of the night – music festival back to Taiping Town outside of Kunming on April 19. The all-local festival should be even more diverse than last time, with bands performing punk, blues, metal, hiphop, punk and bluegrass.
The lineup for this edition of the festival includes Heiyu (黑宇), Gouride (狗日的), Broken String (断弦), Endless Torture (无尽折磨), Noise Addiction, No Answer (打死我也不说), Brain Concussion (脑震荡), Co Op Sol (邪作社 – formerly known as Rap Republic), Kouxian (扣弦), Chicken Butt (鸡屁股), Tribal Moons (see above image), Chaling (叉灵), Fang Band (坊乐队), The Quebec Redneck Bluegrass Project and Nicole.
The festival starts at noon and will go late into the night – festivalgoers are encouraged to bring tents to stay on the campground overnight. Food and drinks will also be on sale throughout the day and evening.
The festival will once again be held at the Wumozhai Jiuzhuang Eco-garden on Xiao Jie in Taiping Town (太平镇小街无墨斋酒庄生态元), near the city of Anning (安宁). According to event organizers, the number 17 bus at Xiao Ximen can be taken to Taiping Town, and there will also be a shuttle bus between Taiping Town and the Arts Theatre at Wuyi Lu and Dongfeng Xi Lu throughout the day for five yuan one way.
