Friday: Brain Failure at Speakeasy Bar
Beijing punk veterans Brain Failure (脑浊) bring their high-energy show back to Kunming tonight, almost a year to the day since their last show in the Spring City. One of China's most-traveled rock bands - they've toured all over China, the US and Japan - Brain Failure will be joined this time around by local bands Noise Addiction and the recently renamed Pretty in Punk (打死我也不说, formerly No Answer) for a 9:30 show at Speakeasy Bar. Admission is 30 yuan.

Friday: Earthquake benefit dance party at TC/G Nordica
Beginning at 8 pm tonight TC/G Nordica will host a dance party with all proceeds from the door going to the earthquake relief effort in Sichuan. Admission is 10 yuan.
Friday: Jiabe school benefit at The Hump Bar
Beginning at 9pm on Friday night The Hump Bar will hold a benefit show to raise money for renovations to a dilapidated school in the small Tibetan village of Jiabe in northwestern Yunnan - see this post for more details. Performers from Makye Ame Tibetan restaurant will start off the evening, followed by the Tribal Moons, Lumberjack Jon and DJ Fan. Admission is free with performers donating their remuneration to the school in addition to 30 percent of bar takings.

Saturday: Han Ying concert at TC/G Nordica
Folk performer Han Ying, who has mastered a variety of drums, flutes and several instruments that don't have English names, will play an 8pm show at TC/G Nordica on Saturday night. Admission is 30 yuan for adults, 15 yuan for children.
Sunday: Wenchuan earthquake benefit at Speakeasy Bar Speakeasy Bar and GoKunming have organized an earthquake benefit show that will feature a diverse sampling of Kunming's local music scene, including Co Op Sol, Zhu Xiaolong, JP, Li Fan, People's Rhythm, Synthatron and DJ Kris, plus special guests. Admission to the show is a 20 yuan donation, which includes a complimentary bottle of Yanjing Beer.
All takings at the door – plus 30 percent of the takings at the bar – will be donated to the Red Cross, which has agreed to send a representative to the show. Additional donations are also welcome.

Friday: Live saxophone and new menu items The Silver Spoon Café in Kunming's Beichen area will be featuring live sax music from 6 to 9 pm tonight. The Silver Spoon has also recently added some items to its menu including white chocolate chunk raspberry cheesecake.
Saturday: Uprock All-Stars Uprock will be holding another 'All-Stars' party featuring a big lineup of Kunming-based DJs playing shorter sets. Admission is free.
This month: Yuansheng Studio minority music classes
Throughout this month, Yuansheng Studio in the Loft art compound on Xiba Lu will be offering minority music and dancing courses taught by the studio's resident performers. The music program will feature instruction in a variety of instruments including the mouth harp, gourd flute, Chinese flute, leaf harp and more. Yuansheng's dancing program will focus on different Yi dances involving singing and drum playing.
Classes are held daily, with weekday classes running from 3 to 5 pm and two sessions on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to noon and 3 to 5 pm. Kunming's first – and probably last – snow of the winter is melting away and spring appears to be returning to the 'Spring City'. After a long, subdued holiday with few events around town, things are starting to pick up as students return and the city emerges from its hibernation. LomoKM exhibition at Halfway House
A three-day exhibition and photo contest organized by LomoKM opens today and runs through Sunday night at Halfway House. The exhibition is a celebration of LomoKM's second year of existence featuring hundreds of photos taken according to lomography's "Shoot – don't think" philosophy.
'Scream & Shout' at The Hump
Tonight The Hump Bar will feature a night of electronica with DJs Jezz and Christian and special guest DJ Shonny. Vodka and Red Bull will be on special for only 12 yuan, with music and dancing expected to last until the wee hours of the night.
Concert: Nathan Stokland at Chicago Coffee Chicago Coffee in the Think UK residential complex off of Jiaoling Lu will be hosting an evening of music by singer/songwriter Nathan Stokland on Saturday night. The free show starts at 7:30 and will feature songs from Stokland's new album "Our November Footsteps".
