I remember about 10 years ago, in the morning you could see traditional wooden sailboats on Erhai that I presume were being used by the locals for fishing. I'm not sure if they're still around, because I think there is some kind of fishing ban in effect. At least, I haven't noticed the boats for some time.
Every time I travel by car or train through Dali or Lijiang, I see countless plumes of smoke coming off the farmer's fields. If I had to guess, I'd say pretty damn common.
Burning your fields can put you in prison in East China. Why the hell does Yunnan allow it? It doesn't seem too smart to sabotage one of the main drivers of your GDP.
I don't have any concrete evidence, but I feel that the Chinese ISPs might be doing something to cripple performance and reliability non compliant routers. At least, my POS free "Mercusys" brand router seems a hell of a lot more stable than my WRT-54Gs.
They have this program in many cities in East China. At least the city I'm living in it has been successful. I agree 15RMB is too much though. It should be more like 100RMB per month.
Despite the problems, I am still very impressed with the speed at which this line is being built. As I've mentioned before, in Toronto they've been promising extra subway lines for decades.
This article pretty much confirms what I suspected about line 5. At this stage, it's still possible they could pull the plug on it. I don't seem them finishing it by 2017 as originally envisioned. I'm even skeptical it could be ready by 2020.
