Forums > Living in Kunming > Baoshan Life

Be aware that although Baoshan is classed as a prefecture level city, unlike other cities of the same classification (like Kunming) it is not an urban area. As such it cannot be compared to a tier 2-3 city. That is not necessarily a bad thing.
Baoshan has one county level city (think of something like tier 6), a district, and 3 counties. Total population 2.5m, total area about 20 000 sqkm.

Full fat is better, and give a thicker yogurt. Commercial low fat yogurts are set with rennet.

The other thing you could try is heat it to almost boiling (90 deg) first as this breaks down the protein, and avoids stringy protein strands. Then let it cool to below 45 degrees (luke warm) before adding the culture. If it is too hot it will kill the bacteria in the culture. Temperatures are not critical, you don't need a thermometer, but it helps.

@Alpage. If when you pass you ask them for a mingpian (business card) or a flyer, your wife could perhaps enquirer further with a phone call, in slow time.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Favorite snacks from big grocery store

The cost of living in Kunming is expensive, some things more expensive than even Shanghai. Eating out, like for like is and example.
Greek yogurt is expensive, as is cottage cheese, in comparison with EU and especially the US; where dairy is cheaper.
You can make your own Greek yogurt, I have, an flavor it with jam if you want that style of fruit flavor. There is a recent thread on making yogurt on here if you search.
My favorite snack, which is seasonal, is the candied whole kumquats.

Off topic, but related to theme songs. When we watched terrestrial TV we listened to the whole theme, even if only in the background while we quickly made a cup of tea or finished off some other chore. With streaming, or watching box sets, we quickly FF over the theme song and titles. We are missing a lot of great music.
Everything else said by the last two posters can be captured within the idea that we no longer live in a society, we live in a market.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
