Forums > Living in Kunming > Bring in Mangosteen from Thailand I have found that the vendors I use say jin, but actually mean gongjin. IE, the vendors confuse the two. Easy to check, by just repeating back using gongjin in your response. I have only ever had nods of agreement. I have not seen jin (500g) used for over 10 years.
Others may have had a different experience.
Forums > Travel Yunnan > Wenshan/Malipo Travel Advice (Driver/Translator) Car, yes. You can always find a driver for a fee in towns. You might even get a daily rate from a taxi driver. Perhaps your friend knows someone, who knows someone, etc.
Translator, possibly not in Malipo. You will probably find a translator who is willing to travel with you from Kunming, if you pay for transport and accommodation. They will then be able to assist with getting train/bus tickets, hotel, etc.
Try putting a classified ad on Gokunming - Wanted Translator for travel in Wenshan.
I do see people advertising here who offer translation and assistance type help. Possibly uni students. You should get a response to an ad.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Bring in Mangosteen from Thailand Mangosteen are falling in price now as they are more in season. If the mangosteen you buy in Thailand tip you over your baggage allowance, they won't be cheap anymore.
Great Britain in Kunming schedule of events
Posted byInvitation only usually means that you need to ask for an invitation. If you are seen as being able to make a useful contribution, or you can show a specific interest in the topic, you will get an invitation.
I have been to events that are flooded with people just handing out business cards, for anything. I have even ejected carpet and curtain salesmen from HR events.
The fully booked will probably be by local officials who don't want to miss out. The reception is usually dinner.
Old town fire quickly contained in Shuhe
Posted byYes I think the old town was all locals, and the new town was all businesses and hotels, bars, etc. I think they abut each other.
But it does seem a little odd that all these fires started in the small hours of the morning. If it was arson I can think of many alternative reasons for this, including protection rackets.
Old town fire quickly contained in Shuhe
Posted byAnother sad event.
At least this time the watercourses, that run through the streets to provide water for fire-fighting, were not built over. As I believe they were in Shangrila.
Yunnan Baiyao finally discloses toxic ingredient
Posted byThere are several deadly natural and synthetic substances that are used in small doses for medicinal purposes.
Bella Donna, digitalis, warfarin, arsenic, spring to mind. I am sure there are many more.
Urban management officers replaced by plants
Posted byYep, there definitely needs to be rules, or at least the enforcement of existing rules.
