Forums > Living in Kunming > stuck up lao wai

I can understand both sides. When on the street I see a foreigner, I usually try to make eye contact and sometimes I smile... not because I want to be nice, but because I'm happy to see other people sharing perhaps a similar situation here.
I'm German, and German people here in Kunming are indeed rare, so I don't really identify with the US Americans in Kunming. In my university, the Americans do everything together, it seems, and I wonder if they wonder about me: why do I never speak to them (except for a "hi" and a smile)? It's mostly because I came to China for contact with Chinese people, and also with people of other Asian countries... so no wonder I spend most of my time with Chinese, Singhalese, Thai, Lao, Japanese and Vietnamese people here.

Maybe other people just don't feel special enough about other foreigners, so they don't think it's necessary to make eye-contact with them. I wouldn't consider this rude or stuck-up.

Forums > Living in Kunming > What helps against moskitos?

We're living in a dormitory room and have a big problem with moskitos. In the last half hour we killed about 6 or 7 of them. Still at night the constant "meeeeeeeeeeeeee" keeps me awake and their bites itch...

Our window is usually closed, so is our door, so we can't improve much on that. What helps best against them (except for shoes and being quick)?

Buying moskito nets/tents for each of us might be our last option, is there anything else effective? Any recommendable device, fragrance thingie or lotion that definitely works?

Thanks,
- André

Forums > Study > Pointless Visa Renewal?

I'm a German student at the Yunnan Nationalities University. I arrived one week ago and I will be studying here for about 10 months. Back in Germany, I got a students visa (X Visa) with the specifications of:

Entries: 01
Duration of each stay: 000
Issue date: 17AUG2010
Enter before: 17NOV2010

Now my university told us they have to renew our visas and want 400 Yuan for that. Why might my visa have to be renewed? Is there anything I missed? Is this a standard procedure or why are they doing this (I have a scholarship, by the way)...

If I simply just don't appear in the office or refuse to have my visa "renewed", what could the consequences be? After all, my current visa should be valid for a year (or even more).

What does this mean? What can I do?
Thanks,
- André
