Riding this thread to share with everyone a unique taste many residing in Yunnan most likely haven't tried before. And best part is the entire meal is FREE for those who follow the restaurant's official WeChat account prior to October 31. Register to enter the one day free lunch/dinner promotion.
The restaurant is called "吃饭皇帝大" (my own translation: A feast surpassing that of the emperor's).
They feature local flavours of Hunan Province's Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (湘西土家族苗族自治州).
Dishes and tastes are pleasantly different. For example, individual leaf covered clay pot vessels are used to bake some form of marinated meat stew. Before serving, ethnic folk chanting and drumming of pot takes place. The clay is then cracked open, unleashing the aromatic flavors. Yes, the routine is for show and somewhat gimmicky, but the taste is superb. Also, their broiled fish are stuffed with glutinous rice like ones wrapped in banana leaves, or 粽子. Kind of like stuffed turkey but for fish. An ineffable, gastronomic blend which I highly recommend ordering.
The restaurant decor and waiters' attire, including the wooden plates and bowls heighten the Xiangxi Tujia locality vibe, but accented with a fancy tone as required by Golden Eagle Shopping Centre.
I've dined here for their 90% off grand opening a month or two back. The food and atmosphere was fantastic. This time it's on the house. Too bad I won't be around then.
Btw, in the next several days most restaurants (excluding Haidilao Hotpot) at Golden Eagle will participate in the 59 for 100 deal, so look for that as well.
吃饭皇帝大 is located on the 6th floor of Golden Eagle Shopping Center B Building (青年路418号金鹰购物中心B座6楼).
When it comes to necessity sustenance like rice or veggie/peanut cooking oil promotions, Chinese senior shoppers can go berserk. Perhaps even non-necessity sesame oil (芝麻油) for their Chongqing hotpot condiments.
If a limited supply are given away, an innate survival fight or flight switch is turned on. The only flight is towards the cashier. Engage with caution as grannies turn Hulk green. They'd be battling denture and nails without mercy, putting Draymond Green and Chow Yun-fat to shame with their flying tiger elbows hidden dragon knees. Don't underestimate a mob of elders because of age. I've been pushed around by them on numerous occasions. Though less agile, they have experience on their side.
Imported lobsters are luxury goods that may or may not be on their radar. So hopefully no stampede this weekend, nor tragic collateral demise of young exapts from running of the laotou bulls.
Kind of like in Chongqing, hotpots there are just called hotpot. But elsewhere they are refered to as Chongqing Hotpot. Same with Sichuan restaurants respectively.
The Boston lobsters at Hema are on average .4 to .5 kg. A few are super massive, over 2kg imo, sold for 999rmb a pop. They prepare them by steaming not baked. Garlic and prepared sauce applied afterwards prior to serving. Four other preparation methods would vary. Whether from your hometown Boston or Maine, they are truly delicious.
Btw, only first 100 lobsters are free. Entire half kg lobsters mind you. So expect early queuing. 16cny for preparation fee.
In two days, on the 26th, another Hema Supermarket by Alibaba will hold another grand opening. This time at Joy City Shopping Center on 环城南路168号 across from Panlong River.
The supermarket itself will be ~6,000sqm. Massive. 5 times the size of that ice skating rink.
Imorted Boston lobsters (super delicious and my hands down favorite) will be free! 鲍鱼 or abalone will be on sale for 一块.
Discounted crayfish too, among other fresh seafood.
So don't miss out this Saturday. I'm guessing it will be jamed pack, unless you arrive early in the morning.
Reddit serendipitously featured an adorable video of a snub-nosed monkey (endemic to SW China) on their front page, on the eve of Kunming's biodiversity conference tomorrow no less:
This fluffy one being hand-fed appears to be a Sichuan golden hair monkey (aka Sichuan snub-nosed monkey). Video, rather than images, truly captures their essence.
It appears GoKunming has featured these sub-nosed monkeys quite a bit over the past twelve years. Looks like conservation efforts to stave them from extinction panned out.

New population of critically endangered monkeys found in Yunnan
A lengthy piece on Flying Tigers just published on CNN. Also a short video showcasing one of the last three living volunteer pilots, a 96-year old Losonsky. Cool pictures of the cool P-40 fighter planes in air are featured too.
The article even briefly mentioned Kunming...
"Chennault expressed his disappointment at his group's first combat mission against Japanese bombers attacking the AVG base in Kunming, China, on December 20, 1941. He thought the pilots lost their discipline in the excitement of combat."
Our collective love for Spring City is what fuels our solidarity. Much love to all.
Kunming Aegean Shopping Mall is now offering surgical masks on their official Wechat account. 50 masks for 120 rmb. Delivered to your door for those who may need them. The price is reasonable considering widespread price gouging on ebay, amazon, and the likes.

Flying Tigers memorial opening tomorrow
Posted bySomeone should let CNN know, Frank Losonsky died at age 99 earlier this year in February. Apparently he was the last remaining Flying Tiger.
