Forums > Living in Kunming > Carrefour Giving Up On China Materialism in Ferrari's best selling city along with Suzhou are old news. How the Politburo is cleaning up these infamous cities are not. The current regulatory ins & outs of those cities trickle down to Kunming eventually.
It's not wise to assume buzzwords of 'the big evil corporations' are asinine and irrelevant to us the consumers. The grievances many of us share in this thread and in China generally are due to blatant disregard of those buzzword ordinances you brush off as yada yada.
Yet nor is it wise to blindly subscribe to the altruistic image corporations espouse to customers and shareholders. No secret that Carrefour squeezes the profit margins of local agricultural distributors to the bare minimum. However, due to the competitive challenges of Chinese farming given the limited arable lands and their susceptibility to toxic pollutants..... many cut corners in ways that threaten the health of your loved ones. After all, they have their own to look after. Particularly the "peasant" farmers you try to save.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Carrefour Giving Up On China Facts? "blah blah blah"
Accountability?? "blah blah blah"
Wow, somebody sounds just like Trump.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Carrefour Giving Up On China Yes, fruit hawkers may be cheap, but may come from illegal and unregulated sources of pesticide. It's the long-term health risk you take when buying massively pristine, seedless grapes for 10 kuai/kg or the vibrantly red strawberries per basket for 10 kuai on the sidewalks.
Same risks may apply for small Taobao fruit wholesalers. Scandals are prevalent in all corners. Though due to verified accountability of Taobao sellers as is the case for Carrefour, sourcing from licensed farmers whose agricultural practices abide by health safety standards may increase their business half-life, despite reducing half-life of their produce.
Whereas street hawkers can appear today and disappear tomorrow. No accountability.
Going back to previous recycling topic. Just announced, Kunming will follow footsteps of major cities like Hanzhou to implement mandatory separation of dry and "wet" garbage waste disposal protocols beginning next year.
The fate of your leftover mixian soup in plastic containers remains to be seen.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Carrefour Giving Up On China Foresight is 20/20 for vicar. Any predictions for Luckin Coffee Inc.?
Since IPO on Nasdaq, Luckin Coffee is suddenly everywhere within a 1km radius.
However, their onslaught of single-use plastic cups, lids, and straws is a disillusioning sight. I don't see them as "rivals" to Starbucks.
Shanghai and Shenzen Starbucks may have gone experimental in one thousand of their outlets by replacing plastic straws with strawless sipping lids.
I say Kunming could be the first trial city to pioneer the subsidization of biodegradable plastic packaging for all restaurants and delivery services like Meituan and Elema.
Go beyond "civilized." Become a model city in China. Environmentally conscientious Spring City. Kunming goes Green. Phasing out Plastic in South of Cloud Yunnan. Can you see the global headlines vicar?
Municipal and provincial officials sharing congratulatory hand shakes with President Xi & Co. smiling and clapping their hands in the backdrop.
Oh how glorious for the WWF. A win for the city, the nation, and the world. Particularly for marine life ensnared in plastic, much less baby whale calf spared from being washed ashore filled with plastic in tummy.
Patrick Scally & contributors representing GoKunming, in cooperation with Yunnan Foreign Business Club, should touch base with liaisons in pitching this proposal to local government branches (i.e. CFDA, CCA) and local representatives of Meituan, Elema, Alibaba, or JD.
We the members/voice of the foreign community residing in Kunming could fill online petitions vouching for this initiative or conservation campaign.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Carrefour Giving Up On China Can't argue with tiger there. Plastic containers from take out and food delivery services are out of control.
You've bought fresh poultry and produce on Taobao years ago vicar?

Posted byJust Hot Jan, I need to inform you that Just Hot is the subsidiary of JiaHua Bakeries. Although TKP's Just Hot targets higher-end market segments, the apple doesn't fall from its tree... it's no wonder their ginormous croissants can't compare with the croissant quality of their direct competitor, Bon Appétit, which is situated not far from them on the same B1 level.

Posted byThank you with sincerity for doing your part in being their beacon of light now, and glimmer of hope for their future.
Touching base on the challenges of recruiting credentialed teachers to rural outskirts.
Though some may scoff at technology and change from traditional pedagogy/curriculum. Perhaps the anecdote in that domain lies somewhere in the advent synergy of 5G, A.I, and satellite internet....
to bring real-time machine learning based academia to backwater classrooms in virtual form. Reaching not just hundreds of millions of rural children in China. But bridging education access gap to those less fortunate families in the Middle East, India/Pakistan, South East Asia, Africa, and the rest of the world.
Perhaps a ground-up, global multinational cooperation effort with coalition of governments' subsidies to incentivize private innovations need to occur to make this a reality.

Posted byNo cloudy, Starbucks aren't enough to give rural children the opportunities for a brighter future.
Building more schools and hiring a legion of well-trained teachers to foster a better education system may help.
The government needs to allocate more funds to building and revamping these countryside schools.
And where may local governments get that money outside Beijing?
Perhaps by selling or leasing prime real estate locations at exorbitant prices to foreign investors, such Hang Lung Properties.
By permitting these deep-pocketed developers to build skyscrapers at sought-after locations, value of land further increases, hence their selling/leasing prices resulting in higher revenues (inc. corporate taxes from ensuing business & offices) for funding public projects such as said public education.
This is where the corporate buzzwords you so despise come into play. Accountability, transparency, and oversight. Without which, corrupt-prone local officials may end up pocketing the hongbaos from developers to be transferred to their private Swiss bank accounts used by their own privileged children studying aboard.
With accountability, transparency, and oversight... hundreds of billions in funds are more than enough to provide poverty stricken children the first steps in the right path to a brighter future.

Posted byCostco officially opened in Shanghai today. First store in China.
If and when this hypermarket chain opens in Kunming, the usual complainers would instead be raving in joy, and overlooking how such "soulless" investment resources and land allocation would be better served alleviating poverty.
Sometimes it comes down to whether new projects tailor or serve one's own needs.
