We just went a couple weeks ago to Chiangmai to switch from a tourist visa to a work visa. Because we had all the correct paperwork (invitation letter, bar code, etc), it went smoothly. However they said we could not select the express service since we were not Thai citizens. We had to wait about 6 business days to get it back.
There is a discussion amongst us foreigners down here in Banna about what the current baomu salary should be. What is the current baomu salary up in Kunming (either by hour or per month)? Maybe that will help us figure out what is reasonable.
Has anyone heard of any changes to policies on packages coming from other countries going through Kunming customs? We have lived in China for 4 years, and have never had customs issues until our most recent package. This package has only a small amount of kids clothes in it, but they are still taxing us on it. They told my husband that as of October they have started checking every package coming from another country and that all packages will incur a tax no matter the value. I can't decide if we misunderstood them, or not. Has anyone heard anything or experienced something similar? On the flip side, has anyone received packages without any issues since October?
I currently live in Jinghong on a Travel Visa (hoping to get a work visa soon), and we need a drivers license asap. The travel visa is a 1 year, 90 day stay. Many people have told us that the Jinghong office won't give driver's licenses to people on travel visas no matter how long the stay is. Therefore, we are thinking about going to Kunming to apply for one. My question is, do you know of anyone in Kunming who has recently received a drivers license on a travel visa? I am just curious to see if this is even a possibility.
