or you might be able to get a chinese DL without having one in the country of origin, but I think this would mean to also have to pass the actual "driving skills" test in china and maybe even go through some lessons. the best thing to do is go to the local traffic police and ask about the latest rules, as they tend to change with the weather in china...
I don`t suppose you can find more "flexible" approach than Yunnan...in Jiangsu they didn`t even look at me without having an "officially stamped" Chinese name and a minimum of one year residence permit, when I asked about the DL... so...maybe try... Gansu...:) ? Could be easier to bribe someone at least...;)
hey, I took the test in december, can`t remember the exact address but it`s in Guandu, Traffic police department or sth., I used to take bus 107 from Jinma fang I think( about 40 min. ride there), Anyway, if you check a map of KMG, it`s easy to find. I think it`s a good idea to pay one visit there before the test, they can tell you all the information about what you need to do and where (have your original licence translated etc...) and also copy the complete latest preparation material for the test to your USB and tell you exactly which part you need to learn (I remember there is an extra part for motorbikes or so...if you consider taking that too, you should go there and make sure you can- it depends on you current licence too...). Me, I went there on a Friday, got all the info and then passed the test next Thursday, leaving with the licence in my hands :) Good luck!
oh, great, I was confused by all those licence types on the back of my licence...thanks for good news! I`m not gonna drive in KMG, usually use a SUV around Shanghai (finally with a licence :)))- feels safer than the scooter but... I will need that too later...
Ok, so I got the C1 licence, now the problem is, when I was applying, the lady filling in which type of licence I`m applying for first started to write "C1, F..." while staring at my europian licence translation, and then she said, oh, it will be enough just to write C1 as it includes "all". But now as I see it does not include N or P which is the "dianche" and obviously not even the F (motorbike)- but I wouldn`t mind that. What I`m gonna need some day IS the diandong che, so now I have to do the whole damn thing again? The papers, payment, etc....basically change my licence just to add items "N,P".?? I can`t even make myself go to the traffic police as I think I would kick someone`s ass for not explaining things properly, that b.... just filled in "something" btw saying that it includes "all" I can drive according to my licence (which is also not true but...) ....anyway, zenme ban?
