Thanks. I was thinking this, getting an (F) visa from HK, was perhaps only possible for Americans. Maybe because of an arrangement between the US and Chinese governments or because the passports would be sent to the US.

Looks like I was wrong. Maybe I was thinking of a longer term visa.
