We've been notified that the shutdown was rescheduled from 10th to 13th.
I don't get why he didn't sell the operations instead of just cold shutting them down. Or were they really not profitable enough for anyone to want to buy..
Of course if he just really wanted to make a statement about unions and because of that refused to sell. Though I would have expected much clearer commnication about his reasoning in that case.
My in-laws (well singular as of late), live in mountains in Changning county in Baoshan.
My wife has told, that the tree cover in the mountains has visibly returned within last 6 years, after local government introduced measures to limit cutting of trees.
They now have to collect dead trees and branches, and often use side product from feeding their pigs - dried leftovers of corn - to heat water for example, or stay warm in the evenings.
Incidently, besides smoking, I'm pretty sure that the daily use of open fire for cooking contributed to why the in-laws turned into an in-law.
As a result of which, more families there are now considering to switch to electricity for that purpose - will see how that idea goes through to the elder generation.
@Alien: Well I think that everything in China derives from the party wanting to stay in power.
I suppose some claim that the equivalent of the party, elsewhere where such single party systems do not exist, is some generic "establishment", and in that sense those countries could seek to control their respective people to maintain that establishment.
Of course situation is quite different in countries where establishing new parties and seeking supporters, political control, and replacing the old establishment with new establishment is a little easier than in China.
As for privileging businesses (I guess you mean over individuals?), in matter of VPNs, I think that if international trade, related economic matters, and development of domestic science and technology etc were not an issue at all, China could have blocked ALL foreign websites years ago already.
From that perspective, I guess the issue is how much do common people in China contribute to anything that makes VPNs necessary.

Posted byIn extreme poverty, people will even limit survival to that of their own person.
This has been reported, for example, from DPRK prison camps with family members turning on each other to survive.
In today's China you cannot make this comparison to DPRK, but China's history has left its marks in people's behavior today.

Update: Officials fired after school stampede kills six
Posted byIf I interpret Mike correctly, he is referring to general attitude of average Chinese person toward other human beings, nature, and generally everything other than himself and his immediate family.
For long time China was poor country, and it still reflects in many parts of the society. One is, that average Chinese will always put his own survival and benefit first.
