Perhaps instead of chastising, you can recommend a good local Chinese bar, latataille! I'd be interested in finding a good bar where I could meet locals (but not really into the Kundu scene)
I just left there this morning; there's lots of hostels and hotels throughout what remains of the old town. I stayed at N's Kitchen & Lodge on the continuation of Chicika Rd., on the south side of Dawa Rd. It was ok (the yak burger there is great!), but there's several backpacker type places to choose from on this street, so you won't have a problem finding a room.
There's a Chinese guy called Alex, sometimes advertises second-hand bikes on goK...belongs to a bike club and sells out of a shop on Longquan Road. If you look through the classifieds, you could find his number..
