Yes, it's still worth going. As others have stated, the main reason for visiting is to see the surrounding countryside, but you can still spend some time in what's left of the old town.

Cheers, and damn that protocol! Always throws a Spaniard in the works..
Perhaps instead of chastising, you can recommend a good local Chinese bar, latataille! I'd be interested in finding a good bar where I could meet locals (but not really into the Kundu scene)
I just left there this morning; there's lots of hostels and hotels throughout what remains of the old town. I stayed at N's Kitchen & Lodge on the continuation of Chicika Rd., on the south side of Dawa Rd. It was ok (the yak burger there is great!), but there's several backpacker type places to choose from on this street, so you won't have a problem finding a room.
There's a Chinese guy called Alex, sometimes advertises second-hand bikes on goK...belongs to a bike club and sells out of a shop on Longquan Road. If you look through the classifieds, you could find his number..

Around Town: Flying Tigers Museum
Posted byI saw this museum back in March this year, and thought it was well worth a look through (although it took me a while to locate it first time). I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in wartime history. There's also a Flying Tigers museum in Chongqing. It was a bit smaller, from memory, but also well worth the visit.
