Forums > Living in Kunming > 101 Good Reasons to live in China

What is a skeptic to believe? haha. One should probably be happy that people can even come up with 101 unique items even if using some creative freedom. All the creative freedom in the world would not help me even get 10 points out about my current location. Seems the grass might actually be greener this time.

Would be curious to know how long that feeling last. Anybody can get jaded after a few years of the same thing.

Great to know that there are used music supply spots in Kunming. I figure I will have my hands full between teaching and Mandarin classes, but if there are any amateur musician jam sessions in town, do let me know. Bass player in the house!

So on a last point (and I apologize as perhaps I made the thread title a bit misleading), do the salary figures thrown out above (~ 6,000-7,000 RMB for high schools and universities and ~ 8,000-10,000 RMB for language schools) make sense in the Kunming area? Yunnan province?

No need to give specific numbers if you feel hesitant to do so. If you could however, indicate if either number seems high, low, or about right, I would appreciate it. I know the actual number will depend on background and experience so I expect there would be multiple possibilities for answering this question.

Thanks again everyone. Looking forward to the experience no matter who is employing me next spring.

Like Tonyaod said, without a doubt- Thanks tigertiger! Very objective. I certainly would appreciate any subjective ("If it were me I would...") comments if anyone has any.

I'm a pretty independent person, but I understand the value of camaraderie, especially among ex-pats in China (from the POV of the locals) so I definitely honed in on tigertiger's comments about location. Hmmm.

Thanks again all.

Hey Kunming,

I am expecting to be located in Kunming within the next 6 months. I have gotten a few job offers to teach English, but I am still trying to figure out what to do. One thing I noticed is that the local language schools seem to post higher wages ~ 8,000-10,000 RMB / month vs the offers I've gotten from high schools and universities ~ 6,000-7,000 RMB /month. The other perks do seem to vary as well with the high schools and universities more consistently offering health insurance.

To others currently in Kunming have a similar experience with the different English teaching opportunities? just for reference, I have a B.S. and M.S. degree, 5+ years work experience, though I am not a professional teacher. I do have a TESOL certificate and I have teaching experience as a freelancer.

Thanks!
