It is so easy to solve this problem seriously, contact a local tour guide, she will come at the airport with a sign and help your friend. Then you can instruct them about the hotel you want him to stay, how to change the money etc..and when he arrives in the aiport he can use her phone to contact you and everything will be smooth.

he will be in km tonight at 11.20pm?
He knows you should be at the airport but you cannot contact him to tell him you won't be there?
Contact a local travel agency who will send an english speaking tour guide, she/he will deal with everything.

Teaching languages is actually a very complicated process that interacts with how our brain is designed, its mechanisms of retention, different approaches in learning according to personalities etc...I would say more than rocket science! If we analyze the design of software language tools for example they cannot be created by just some unskilled native speaker or somebody who got some years of experience working in a classroom.
But yeah so far the way to teach is still most like sitting, listen to somebody who can have some communication skills, doing some homework and no much more, and that's almost worldwide.
But are students really learning something? And what about China in particular?

@peter99 sorry for repeating myself but really you are over assuming..other models were at the same car show and nothing happened to them. it is all about guanxi,like most of the things here...

@peter99 i think tonyaod explained pretty well,it is hard to understand what is really allowed or not in this country, you say government is cracking down on modeling show but there is plenty of that happening every day smoothly. if u have been living enough here you know that all is about guanxi, maybe they thought they had some good ones. i wouldnt be so judgemental without knowing what happened exactly.
