While what Shyam is correct about B of A being the easiest way to get money from the US it is not free.

You are charged a 1% fee for each transaction. So whatever amount you are receiving in Rmb is 1% less than the current exchange rate between B of A and CCB.

So it is not "free".

It is, however, the best and least expensive way I have found to get cash from the US to China.

Credit card transactions can be charged an added fee for currency fluctuations in addition to whatever standard charges they may have.

Banking in Rmb is the least expensive way to go and the Rmb is growing stronger so any money in Rmb is likely to appreciate more than the US$. I believe I just read it has appreciated over 2% in the last year which is quite good.

mPRin said he is charged £3 but that is most likely the minimum charge and likely to go higher for higher amounts. The banks like to make money coming and going but they never take a loss...

I heard a story... that they might ask you for criminal record clearance certificates from every country that you have ever lived in. Clearly an impossibility. And they would only have your current passport to guide their knowledge of which countries those may have been unless one was foolish enough to disclose more info... don't!

Fortunately my school handles this for me. You all have my sympathy. Hope it gets sorted out or becomes less complicated.

Or if the island crisis escalates maybe we're all persona non grata

Thanks. It looks very far on the map. I can't find accurate info on Google or on the web and I'm not too sure about the buses. I don't want a 2 hour bus ride and a friend is arriving about 9 or 10pm by bus from Laos but it's so far I think I'll send him the Hanzi for my address and talk to the cab driver if he needs help.

Guess he will have to take a taxi as the buses would be tai ma fan.

I've tried looking on Google Maps and used the maps on this site but finding the buses is rather confusing.

Has anyone traveled from Wenlin Jie (general area) to the South Bus Station? I need to find the bus route or else I'll take a cab.

It looks that the Metro Line #1 goes directly to the South Bus Station and so I'm looking for buses from Dianmian da dao or Dong Feng Dong Lu area to the closest end of the new Metro line.

Any help?
Thanks!

It's really hard to judge this project without many specific details. Huge projects like this require elaborate studies for the many different engineering and economic challenges as well as the potential risks vs. benefits, not to mention the dangers to the environment. (alas I fear the latter is given the lowest priority)

Evaluation of the effects of the loss of the water to existing waterways and adjacent lands is an enormous task.

Then there is always the very good chance that after years of planning, design and with construction underway, a substantial change in weather patterns could bring vast quantities of rain, filling up the now dry reservoirs and making the project obsolete.

Who can say what the future holds for us? With all the uncertainties of global climate change it may be a smart move... or not....

The projected demand for clean potable water has been predicted for many years to be the most important single requirement facing the world. However waste continues to exacerbate all of these problems.

California wastes huge amounts of water in agriculture and continues to do so! Water wars started there over a century ago!

The Israelis have developed the most sophisticated and most efficient drip irrigation systems in the world. Their state of the art technologies grow high quality foods in arid climes.

I think the billions could be spent more effectively by educating farmers to use more efficient watering systems, increasing yields and reducing pollution. You can buy an awful lot of drip irrigation plastic pipe for very little money.

But I don't know much about growing rice which seems to be very water intensive... There has to be a way to develop a wholistic approach to solve this problem without creating new ones.

Lots of people are against this new plant.

I was told yesterday by an administrator at a large local university that all students were prohibited from going to that protest on May 16th.

The same person also stated they were in support of it. That seems to be the general consensus that I have heard. There is much more opposition to the opening of this plant than can be seen at any protest.

Great article! Thanks very much.
What about hotel prices? Can you give a range? I'd be looking for least expensive but clean and quiet outweigh everything else except near the beach.

How about the price for the transport from Bangkok to the island?

Thanks again. You do great work!

Slice of Heaven has some nice food, its very clean and comfortable and the staff try very hard to please. I can understand Barbara is trying to run a business and it's her right to set the pricing. A large pizza for 20 quai was a bargain for sure. Obviously it was not a money maker without other sales. Anyone can be brisk from time to time but generally I think it's a good place.

I don't drink alcohol at all and was surprised that the place was 1/2 empty on a Friday night. The change in policy reflects a decent establishment trying to stay in business. We should support this nice little respite.
