chinasmack is blocked too. Not the BBC though. There is an interesting slideshow to watch: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8078746.stm but it's probably only a matter of time before it is cut off as well.

I doubt educated people here would claim Korea as "part of the mainland". I could be wrong though,, I once read a nutter post from a guy who believed China had the right to claim Western Asia all the way to Hungary because the Mongols (who ofcourse also are "Chinese") once conquered it. Nothing really suprises me here any longer.
If you are born in the US and is an American citizen then you are an American and not an ABC. I think those terms are derogatory and a part of the usual "Remember that you are Chinese first of all" crap that BLIIIP promotes a lot.
I didn't think you could get blueberries in Kunming. 25 kuai for 150 g might be a little high. Does anyone know where to buy some of the ordinary non-organic ones? I've never seen them at the greengroces I have been to.
If you wanna feel all local and stuff get a bolt cutter and prowl the streets early morning. Plenty of available second hand bikes to be found.

The comment from Chris had deserved a wider audience. Beluga?
Went there yesterday and it totally made my week. Nice decor and friendly staff and a real salad bar. Sadly we both wanted mexican food so I can't really say much about their other courses. The food was great but just a tad spicier would have improved the dish. The best thing was that we almost had the place to ourselves and we could have a quiet conversation without shouting, spitting Chinese people in the background. I realised how much I had missed that since coming here.
We went to Chicago Coffee a couple of days ago and it was a nice experience. The place is cozy with soft comfy chairs (I realized how much I have missed one since coming here) and they have a nice little collection of English language books in the corner consisting mainly of classics and travel litterature. I was looking forward to trying their advertized tortilla bar but it wasn't up and running that evening.
Instead we went for 2 12 inch pizzas -roast chicken and pepperoni- but we quickly realized that 1 would have been enough. Those things are heavy. I am mainly into Italian style pizza but Chicago's double layered pizzas are well worth a try. Their coffee seems to be a bit on the expensive side but people say good things about it and they have got a nice selection. I wouldn't mind dropping by again some day,, hopefully when they've got the tortilla thing going. English speaking staff btw.
Kunming-based project aims to make cycling history
Posted byLet me be the first to offer a very sincere "Yawn" and a good luck with the project. I don't mind cycling per se but after having experienced traffic in China I would much rather donate to research into human teleportation so we can avoid spending time dodging cars and sidestepping scooters in the deadly chaos known as the Kunming streets. Can you imagine what it will be like in 5-10 years with their plans to make this a 10 million city without building a subway?
Yunnan coffee grower to export to the US
Posted byNever heard of "ECUM Coffee Group", made a quick search on some Danish websites,, no results and no companies with even remotely similar sounding names. Oh well,, that's 10 mins of my life I am never getting back.
Officials: Yuxi cholera outbreak 'under control'
Posted byHow comforting that it only took 2 weeks to spread the news. Should think people had learned their lesson at this point. Cholera is a m/f of a nasty disease.
Yunnan Copper executive sentenced to death for accepting bribes
Posted byThe corruption in China is out of control but still,,, death penalty. That is ridiculous.
