I live in Mile - about 2 hours from Kunming but I haggled successfully (but still getting ripped off I think) in a large electronics shop, and I have got an ok deal in Suning before. Perhaps the smaller shops are more competitive, but if you can speak Chinese and know your numbers plus be willing to walk away, I think you can haggle just about anywhere in Kunming? Correct me if I am wrong, but judging on what I have seen tonight - please don't abuse me!
May be a little far from you but the Hu Quan hotel in Mile, around 2 hours south of Kunming offers golf, spa (may not be finished yet), hot springs and four hotels and 3 restaurants around a nature lake, the website is www.huquanhotel.com/
I am sorry for your experience. I am currently one of three foreigner teachers at Qinglai school, I do work for the Chinese side and can honestly say I love it here. I have been treated with an amazing amount of respect and I could not ask for more from all the staff. I can not comment on the Korean side of the school as I do not work for them, but please remember the negative press this has for a fantastic school.
There is a fairly big one where I live in Mile, tonight, you need to go to the East Bus Station and get on a bus to Mee Lur. Its about three hours from Kunming though!
