It would be a dramatic and radical but gradual and irreversible change. In 3-10 year period in my opinion.
It is not an ordinary change. It's a sea-change. Mindset and lifestyle must painfully and forcefully change.
It is all about a flawed business model based on too much commercialism and irresponsible consumerism. Outwardly it is bright, alluring and promising but inwardly it is heartless and callous. America being the epitome of these two evils would suffer the most. However, other major cities in the world who adopted this kind of business model would likewise catastrophically suffer. Shanghai, Beijing and other key Chinese cities with this kind of cancerous business model would not be exempted.
America has reached the point of no return. Its people would panic in many forms and its severity would multiply exponentially. They would bet their money from the US dollars, to gold, to stock market, to bond market. But they would just be running in circles and would end up, eventually, almost losing everything in the process. It's a necessary evil!
It has to stop. If this kind of business model continues, ordinary people and the environment cannot sustain it anyways. Irresponsible and unbridled exploitation of the people and natural resources of the developing world would only lead to the uprising of the masses from one country to another and would spread like wild fire. And if people's uprising should fail, mother- nature due climate change has a backup plan. Unprecedented flooding, famine, draught, hurricane, forest fire and etc.. You name every calamitous word you know and mother-nature at this juncture is ever ready to serve it with its full fury.
No opportunities would arise from this financial crisis. No business or businessman would profit likewise. This kind of business model would stop to a standstill. It's a structural defect therefore the whole edifice must go down. The most brilliant business leaders would try their very best to stop its downfall. But they would fail. Its downfall is inevitable.
Thereafter, everybody would look for illumination in China and nowhere else. It is all about the delicate balance of freedom and control, commercialism and socialism, spending and saving. China, China would lead the way .

I agree. I think doing business anywhere in the world, being pragmatic is the safest way to go. Yes, with Kunming's current business environment for foreigners the question "How much can I afford to lose" is the most realistic approach. It's all about calculated risk right? With 10% success rate are you willing to gamble?
We foreigners I think should be reminded that the Chinese people has been doing business for around 3,000 years already. And that the current global business model is based on a approximately 500 years of business experience from the west. 3,000 is definitely much greater than 500. If we talk about wisdom in business I believe the Chinese people has more than we have initially presumed.
The most important thing is to have the right attitude and realistic expectation, then ideas and implementation follow.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Entrepreneur in Kunming? hi prchunter,
I think before great ideas and splendid execution is the question of: Is there a level playing field in Kunming for all entrepreneur (local or foreign). Otherwise, if it is still a protectionist environment then there is really no point in discussing about entrepreneurship in Kunming for foreigners. I think we are not talking about multinational companies here but SMEs.
Unless, the local government makes an effort to make the business environment fair for both local and foreign businessmen, then foreigners must stop day-dreaming of putting-up a business in Kunming. It's a waste of time, money and effort.
Foreigners might have to be just contented with teaching English and in enjoying the wonderful city attractions, tourist-friendliness and pleasant year-round weather Kunming has to offer. No more, no less.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Entrepreneur in Kunming? tiger, i agree with your previous post that for business to be successful, it should not easily be copied. Chinese people are very good at copying. For a business to be successful it should be unique and difficult to duplicate. This is true for both Chinese and foreign business right? Have you heard the capitalist rule of doing business? The "golden rule". "He who has the most gold rules". Does this rule apply to Kunming business environment?
Forums > Living in Kunming > Entrepreneur in Kunming? What do you think of Information Technology(IT) related business in Kunming? Do you think there is a potential? Do you think there is a market for any IT related services that can't be offered by local people?
