Although I understand that those taxi drivers need to be taught that they need to follow the rules, but couldn't you just call the complaint line when the guy refuses to use the meter?
If you are unlucky one day one of these nice well educated pleasant drivers may try to put a knife in you.

In my case it was cause I was interested in China and studied Chinese in Uni. Now it's cause I can make enough money here to have some savings and in a few years will have enough to buy a house somewhere where I am not constantly reminded I am a Laowai.
China since the early 90's has changed so much, in my opinion its not the place it once was in terms of leading an interesting life. While living conditions have changed for the better the society has really started to unravel.
As a single person or a couple with no kids China is still OK,,but with kids its just a place to make money then get the fk out.
