Metro Supermarket
I've previously railed against this place's terrible customer service (despite having the best range of western food in Kunming). But things are definitely improving. You no longer have to show a card on arrival (a QR code will do as you check out), your bags are not taken off you in order to get in, there are trolley-cars for kids to ride in and a lot of the food items that had gone missing over recent months seem to have been restocked.

Metro has many things i cannot find other places, but i still find it a frustrating place to shop sometimes. Seem to frequently be out of things. For example their was very little fresh meat to choose from and actually they were out of many things and i was their just after lunch. They had no loaves of toasting bread and could not tell my wife when they would be getting more in. In looking at the fresh date on Hormel ham it had expired in September. However for first time i was able to shop all the aisles. Not filled with merchandise to be stocked or fork lifts.
Metro Supermarket
Yes, it's a hassle for me to go a long way, but the hassle is worth it. The range of foreign products far surpasses any other supermarket/big box store/or whatever you want to call them. And in comparision to the first time I shopped there 2 years ago, I feel the whole store has improved.
If you compare the variety and the store brand products to the drivvel at the other big supermarkets, there is absolutely no comparison.
My list of real foreign quality products is endless and includes:
- beautiful fresh salmon
- tacos
- lovely baked goods
- fine quality white sugar
- flour - all purpose and for bread
- spices
- a huge variety of spices
- olives
- all the pasta making seasonings and sauces you could want
- frozen puff pastry
- a fantastic selection of dairy products inc. Cream Cheese, Mozzarella, Cottage Cheese, Cheddars, Brie and Camembert, whipping cream - all priced fairly and not overpriced.
- popping corn without the bugs
- the Horeca brand of everything is superb, including olive oil, dish soap, at competitive prices
- etc, etc, etc
Face it, we are in no man's land here in KM so a little bit of inconvenience for all these great products is a god-send.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.
They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.
They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.

This place has stuff that nobody else does. And they have stuff cheaper than anywhere else. My rating is "I wish I didn't have to shop here".
I bought 3 avocados. I got them weighed. The label says 0.585 Kg. No price. Same for the meat. The prices on the shelves are per kg. Do they expect people to calculate the prices? Or do they think that everyone's made of money and they don't need to look at the prices? This is ridiculous. I've never seen this in any supermarket anywhere.
What they should do is force customers to put on roller blades and dance the cucaracha while juggling and put obstacles in the aisles to make the shopping experience even more challenging.
