@Fish: I don't know where you're from, but my guess is that drink driving is only a misdemeanor there and nobody is going to care about it here.

There's a website ( I can't recall the name) that rates the schools and the experiences of the teacher's there. On the website there were schools in which the owner took the money and ran. The teachers weren't paid (both foreigners and Chinese). If I can find it, I'll post it.

@Liumingke1234 Haven't looked properly into the site yet but from what I see with a quick peek it's the ideal sort of thing I needed for some help with knowledge as be sending out my CV to some soon.

Good link :o)

Yeah, it sucks that a DUI from 20 years ago, or a parking ticket could stop you from getting a visa.

My understanding is a background check done in the US will only search for felonies and not misdemeanors or traffic offenses. This is the same type of check that is run when you apply for a job in the US. Of one would just have to do it and see.

Too bad the evil foreigners become the focus here when background checks are never run on Chinese nationals. People in the US can get a record for writing bad checks or being drunk and disorderly. These types of things do not warrant arrests in China (well, they do not use checks do they) much less a permanent record.

As I under you can go to the local police station near where you live in the US and have a check run. It will be the same type of background check done if you want to work at most jobs in the States. If China starts demanding FBI background checks and not hiring foreigners to work in China for $500 or $600 a month then maybe the glory days have ended. If criminals could not work in schools then 75% of the school leaders here (ling dao) would have to vacate their posts.
