I have recently received an work offer from a school in Kunming, but I was concerned as I don't have a clean criminal record- I have a drink driving conviction. I told the my recruiter this, and she said I can use an M visa application instead, with an invitation letter from the company. Great, I thought, so I signed the contract and they sent me an invitation letter, which says I will be training teachers in educational software for a company in beijing for a 3 month period. This is a lie. My recruiter also says I will be able to get a Z visa after 3 months (my contract is for a year) by going to HK.
I don't want to lie to the Chinese consulate in order to get a visa, does anyone know the possible repercussions if i am caught in China? Or is this a usual thing? How easy/possible would this Hong Kong run be in 3 months to get a Z visa? and Why would they (HK) issue me a z visa then and not now? Something seems funny to me.
I would suggest following the law is the best way.
Check your nearest Chinese embassy to see if you can get your working permit and residence permit with a driving conviction on your criminal record.

I agree. If you are coming all the way over here, you best get the information from the horses' mouth NOT from the school. The school will say anything just to get you here. The worst thing you want to do is be misinformed.
I am pretty sure that, unless your local police will provide a letter or a form saying you have no criminal record, you cannot teach in China. I just had to obtain one last month, and the PSB seemed pretty clear on it. Sorry bud.
Right now the PSB is looking to fine as many people as possible so I suggest you do things on the up and up and you are 100% certain before you make any decisions.
I also suggest you go get your info straight from the horses mouth rather than from members of this forum or the school who will lie to your face as long as they get a warm body for their school.
Woops. If they start to seriously crack down on foreigners working and tutoring while on student visas, now that would be a massive hit.
HFCAMPO, how do you know that his school will "lie to your face as long as they get a warm body for their school"? Again, are you just a foreigner creating rumors, or do you know his actual school, and have real evidence that they are involved in a dastardly plot to entrap him?
@Yuantongsi
Nice article. I wish they would make it easier to get a work visa.
mm you do not have to believe me but you can get a lot of first hand testimony from other members of this forum who have been lied and cheated by English schools here in Yunnan and as well as other parts of the country.
Perhaps you can start a new thread asking for specific times and situations when foreigners were either lied or cheated or given wrong info by english schools here in Yunnan or in other parts of China.
