Who really cares what a troll is or who is one? If nobody was a troll, half the commentators on these forums would have nothing to say.
As for not eating Chinese food, I think that if people can't eat the food where they live they probably can't adapt to anything else there either.
Mmkunmingteacher, may I just say that you, sir, are a pompous food snob. Get down off of your high horse, please. You seem like a food cop. It is more than a little bit annoying, sir.
I agree that mms is a troll.
Let me posit a question, just for thought. Of the two following foreigners, which is the actual "food snob"?
1. Has an open mind to trying anything, experiments with all sorts of food from a new, local culture, goes out of his or her way to try all of the local food, from upscale restaurants to down and dirty street food.
2. Thinks literally all local food is disgusting, loudly proclaims that it is all made with sewer oil, toxic chemicals, and industrial bleach, refuses to eat anything locally but only eats food from his or her own culture, because it is clean and much superior to local food.
Seriously, just on those terms, which one is the actual food snob?
For 1), there's nothing wrong with trying and liking all the local food. It becomes snobbery when you expect everyone else to eat the way you do and act condescending and patronizing when they don't.
Anyway, I showed that you're not entirely honest because in this thread you wrote "I have a beef with dry, processed noodles" and in the other thread you admit that you buy ... (drum roll) dry processed pasta from C4.
Are you sure you always practice what you preach? Are you preaching to yourself?
For 2), I've had many locals complain about food safety in restaurants. It's a real issue.
And also, if you think local food is disgusting, is that really snobbery? Why does someone need to force-feed themselves food they don't like?
To "integrate into the culture"? Sure, you're going to offend people if you don't eat the local food, but maybe they just need to learn be tolerant to people's differences. Eating like a local to integrate into the culture is rubbish. You can eat whatever you feel like eating.
When I first got here, I was eating gong bao ji ding by the truckload. Now, I hardly ever eat out.
As far as I'm concerned, I don't need to force-feed myself stuff I don't crave. I simply hardly ever crave Chinese food anymore.
So the answer is that YOU are the snob.
You're deluding yourself about the importance of eating local food all the time. Most locals are too busy raising their families to give a hoot what you're eating anyway. You're not impressing anyone. Nobody cares.
Magnifico, let me say this one, last time. All countries have some good food. What makes good food is fresh, varied, nutritious, well-prepared ingredients. You can disagree with James Beard and Auguste Escoffier — they know better than I.
My problem is with foreigners who come to China, declare that local food is, and I quote, "Disgusting, filled with industrial bleach, and made from sewer oil," and only eat Western, imported food, at about 10-20 times the price of fresh local food.
That annoys the hell out of me. That is just my opinion. I might be wrong. But I find it obnoxious, colonial, and condescending to 1.5 billion people.
If you disagree with me, then fine. People are people. If you think that Jify Peanut Butter, Corn Flakes, and canned pork and beans at 50 times the price are things to get excited about, then great. That is your life. Go for it. But you will never convince me that you are right.
So there is no need to personally insult and assault me. Some people cannot fathom that other humans might have different opinions, that cultures are different, and "your way" is not always the right way. That's life, buddy. Just ignore my posts if they enrage you so. Go enjoy some Sugar Pops for 150 kuai.
I'm off Chinese food for the forseeable future. I've been sick too many times. Plus i'm not into spicy foods, making most of the food here pretty bland, and it's way too oily for me.
I'm happy the C4 import section has been expanded, though I do most of my shopping on www.jinkou.info/en The cash on delivery option is convenient for me.
Haters gonna hate.
mPRin, I promise that I do not hate you or anyone! Do you eat anything besides imported food?
For the last couple of weeks, no. I got severe food poisoning recently so I am going easy on my stomach at the moment, lol. I have been eating at home. Bread, cheese, imported soups etc. When I feel brave enough I might start eating Chinese food again, but at the moment no way, It turns my stomach to think about it lol.
