Practicing English on Wenhua Xiang

colinflahive (167 posts) • 0

We have had a number of our customers at Salvador's complain recently about the amount of students approaching them for free English lessons during meals on the weekend. It is an issue we have dealt with for a long time now, and we are looking for ways to ease the problem.

We would like to contact the schools and teachers that are making this homework for students to ask students to avoid meal time and also learn how to first ask politely before taking photos and starting conversation. If anyone out there knows which schools are are responsible, we would appreciate any contacts.

We are open to any other ideas that can both please our customers and not offend the students who are only doing this because it is their homework.

Thanks

Thanks Colin,
That's what I know...the name is C&F ...'something something weird weird name'- 'Cultural and Leadership communication'...crap.

In Chinese it's something Yang Guang,..something. The owner's name is Codi (or Kodi dunno the right spelling) they were located at Moma but recently moved to another location, not very far.

They don;t have a website or advertisement. So I will see if I can still dig out some phone numbers...

This holiday season was the worst I have seen in many years for this sort of thing. It is not just Salvador's. It was all over Kunming. I had three kids in McD's try. Perhaps a simple sign in Chinese to please respect the customers privacy for English practice homework. Please ask politely. This gives both the customer and the establishment a way to nicely say no thank you or please do not do this. I do feel sorry for both the parents and the kids. I would like to see a reply from the schools who did this.

I know my view is not popular, but I think this is just a part of the local culture. I find it amusing and honorable when they approach me, because I like chatting with them, and they are usually nice little kids. If beautiful women were storming the Sal's outside bar, desperate to talk to foreign men, I do not think anyone would complain. I think it is just the price of being foreign. But again, that is just my opinion.

I agree. It is all about timing and who is asking. I think the best solution is just a sign that is in big red letters as you enter the premises.

The hump is taking care of this situation correctly, a waiter will come by and ask if you would like to participate. But I told the family not to take pictures but they did, I politely asked them to delete the photo, they apologized and deleted and asked if I would sign a piece of paper. Which I agreed with, I educated the family on what is polite and what isn't. Surprisingly they felt they same way and the whole family quickly joined my table and had a chat about the school. These are mostly poor"" families that are trying to stretch their buck to the fullest and are not
Able to afford foreign teachers. (They are paying 6000 yuan a year for 4 hours per week plus their free time escorting their children to foreigner hotspots) I understand how annoyed you can get with this happening frequently, but be kind to these children. Encourage them to use English, it takes 5 minutes. A few words of encouragement, then politely decline further practice. Put your self in their shoes. Deal with it case by case of course. Edit* mmkunmingteacher I
Agree with you mostly, unless I'm eating or chatting

Thanks for trying to solve the problem. I wouldn't mind if it was just once in an afternoon, but it can happen 5+ times on any given Saturday or Sunday. Too much. Yeah, i'm a sour puss. : P

@mmkunmingteacher I agree with that kind of thinking when it comes to this situation, the kids just doing as they been told by school and its hardly parents fault if they cant afford the most expensive school operating in Kunming.
