China is not as safe as you think.

For all the people thinking China is safe, you should have seen Nanping Jie around 7 p.m. at the Dicos where a man with an axe randomly attacked people including me and my pregnant wife. We made it just by sheer luck.

The fact that you don't see crime stats makes it even worse.

It's attack no. 6 or 7 (stopped counting)....and I guess it won't get any better.

For the "It can happen anywhere" advocates. Probably! But not as often and as common and with disregard for life like here in China.
I lived for 25 years in different countries all over the world and in some of the less safe districts and I was NEVER attacked threatened or any other BS. So is the experience of some of my friends. So maybe you may tell yourself all is fine. But I am not waiting for bad stuff to happen to me.

Anyway

A good reminder for the new year to be careful and look over your shoulder....

That said...all you people out there,

Be safe and
Happy Sprig Festival

Dear Dudeson's..everyone lives in China more than 3 days can realize that it's not safe place..
You don't need 25 years of experience as seaman to declare that...what happened to you it's simply karma. Let's talk instead about percentage of crimes related with population or places where you can live some unsafe anecdotes. I crossed China with a tricycle and I felt that I was the only delinquent; nothing happened to me. Trying to judging a place like "China" is like to don't living its contradictions...it's like to don't understand nothing after traveling for 25 years.
...Happy new year!!!

Don't be too relaxed when you're out in public. Watch people around you.

By "I'm not waiting for bad stuff to happen to me" you mean what? You're leaving China because of this?

Honestly I've been in China for more than one and a half year, been to from Liaoning province to Yunnan. Never have something bad happen to me,or have I witness something criminal activity. The only few things I've seen is in Kundu. Nothing else. Maybe I'm just lucky?

In my opinion China is safer than many places I've been to. Some people just attract bad situations. Call it 'karma' or 'law of attraction'. I feel safe here. It's not to say that one shouldn't be careful and aware of their surroundings. Don't venture out to places that attract undesirables. Stay safe in this New Chinese New Year.

There have been random stabbings on pedestrians and kids in recent years. Foreigners have not been passionate targets yet, but its probably a matter of time when this occurs. Maybe a new trend rising. What will happen in China when next international crisis between China and US takes place is not a delicate matter to foretell, but you probably dont want to be around that day.

Its a bleak landscape going on in China at the moment with mental illnesses skyrocketing, traditions dissappearing, loneliness, depression, desperation and rage. Prices escalating, nature destroyed, pollution just about everywhere, moral loosing ground, tightened control and general uncertainty.

Then commercials with successfull people and the general media flashing nonsense, creates envy and nontheless confusion.

The illusion was fun as long as it lasted, now theres the hangover around the corner. And its coming fast. To hold on to family (and why not love) for those that got them, may be the good side of it - it can unite too.

This may not be related to your experiences yesterday, and the culprint in the case, but there will be more for the statistics.

where a man with an axe randomly attacked people - I am NOT certain that this is a crime. From your own description this seems like more of a person with a mental illness. I am wondereing how many people did this man actually attack or wound? Was his purpose to steal or mug others? Or did he just want to murder someone? Was he young or old? Was he dressed in a 3 piece suit or was he dressed like a beggar. Very vague and many unanswered questions!!!! No idea how this single incident reflects an increase in crime. China is very safe from my experience.

There must be something on the Chinese news about it. Seems a shame as that area would be packed with people

It's unfortunate that everytime you find yourself in an unsafe situation, it follows a happy event with you and your partner. Congrats on the pregnancy though!
