i think shane is franchise. as you move down from tier 1 to t2 to t3 etc cities you meet more bosses with a crumbier attitude and the magnitude of the crumb gets coarser. as the old wife says - lower quality people
Hi, I currently work for Shane English School, Yuxi, and have been here for nearly two years so I have a good understanding of how things are done here.....
Yes, Shane is a franchise, but we're not connected to other Shane schools in any way, other than the resources, branding, syllabuses etc that we use.
I'm not sure what experiences Dazzer has had, but it's certainly not from direct experience working in Yuxi. As mentioned above, I've worked here for nearly two years and have really enjoyed working here.
The school is run by a British guy who always supports the teachers and will do everything he can to help with anything they need. This is backed up by a great team of Chinese staff who is very well organized and are also very supportive of the teachers.
What some online forums have mentioned about 'Shane' schools is the 'hidden office hours', in Yuxi there are NO hidden office hours, teachers are expected to come in 30 minutes before their class, and that's it.
The city is a great place to live, with summer- like weather for 10 months of the year.
For a small city there are plenty of western commodities, supermarkets and restaurants to keep you in touch with those treats from home.
There's a small, but close expat community, who regularly get together for social events such as mountain hikes, trips to the hot springs and end of week drinks.
Of course, before I came to Yuxi, I'd also read some reviews about Shane schools in other locations and was also hesitant, but rest assured, Shane Yuxi is NOT connected, and NOT run by the same owners of any other Shane school, we do things our own way here, and that's the reason why many of the teachers sign on for second, and even third year contracts at Shane English school
"teachers are expected to come in 30 minutes before their class"
why?
Magnifico - to prepare for the class they're about to teach, collect any resources they may need and so that they're able to deal with any other issues relating to their class.
I don't know the actual school, but I do personally know MattYuxi and the British guy who runs the school. Both are top quality people I'd put a lot of trust in.
噶
30 extra minutes before every class seems like it adds up to quite a bit over the course of a month. But it depends how your pay is structured.
To show up early to convince the staff that you've prepared for the class seems like micro-management to me.
@ Magnifico - you obviously have your mind made up and I admit that I have no idea of your background. it's pretty normal to prepare for classes and arrive in good time no matter where you work in the world. preparing properly takes time and arriving just before the start of class does not allow sufficient time to prepare, deal with any issues and focus on the class. OP, I guess your opinion depends on whether you see yourself as a teacher or just a white guy in a classroom!
@ LeavingforChina - I don't think I know Matt but the guy who runs Shane Yuxi is a very straightforward and honest guy. I'm sure that he would be happy any questions that you may have. I've met and worked with other staff from that school and they were all pretty happy with the school and the work. finally, don't believe any of the idiots on sites like ESLcafe or similar sites as those trolls often lack any direct experience.
As per your request for information regarding Shane English School Yuxi.
There are two very informative and well maintained blogs about living and working in Yuxi.
One is by an American gentleman;
www.jftrumm.com
The other by an English couple;
www.fash-hill.com
They both give a very honest, objective account of a year or so in Yuxi.
Not only that but they provide a very detailed account of living and travelling around Yunnan and South East Asia in general. They have a much wider non-Kunming centric perspective for those wanting an alternative view.
There is of course the school website which is nothing if not pretty.
www.shaneenglishschoolyuxi.com
There is definitely a paucity of readily available information about Yuxi (in English). However, I suspect that for those who prefer to spend their time off the beaten track this is regarded as a plus....
