When you get a new passport, remember to keep the old one safe. It has your entry stamp on it, hotels and PSB may want to see this. Also, if you have done any banking or other financials that have used the passport number, you will need to drag it out again on occasions.
I have had a new passport for 3 years now, and still have had occasion to use the old one.
Consulate in Chengdu is the closest. A consular offical does come to Kunming a few times a year and you can give them your passport to add pages. They used to mail passport back by EMS but I read this may not still be the policy.
Go to the US website. They have all the information:
I added pages at the Chengdu consulate a couple of years ago. It took less than 30min once inside the consulate. It used to be free and you could add 2 sets, but I think the policy has changed to add one set only and they charge for that now.
If your passport has many years left on it, I'd just try to add pages. If it's going to expire in two years or less, I'd probably just get a new one that comes with more pages now.
Also tigertiger is dead on about keeping your old one. Another reason is that presenting your numerous old visas to Chinese officials makes getting the same or better visa less bothersome should you encounter any problems applying for your next China visa. Presenting a fresh blank passport always raises eyebrows. You would assume they have some system that has all your prior China visas, but it's not like that.
Also, you didn't hear this from me, but if you don't want to pay the outrageous 82usd of 110usd on top of travel expenses, you can always peel off some of those one page visas, say like for the Kingdom of Cambodia. I probably wouldn't peel off China visas, unless you're done with this country.
Also when you get your new passport make sure to mark the box for the one with more pages. They were the same price a year ago when I got a new passport.
Purposely tearing out visas out of your own passport would be a very stupid idea. I do not recommend you do this. Do the right thing.
I think its also an offence isn't it? Under the laws of my country I believe it is fully illegal and you would be prosecuted for any modification. I believe passports are issued to people but remain the property of the government who issued them.
HK now regularly staples in a print out for date of entry, and I unstaple that piece of paper and remove it. I don't like staples in my passport.
I find it hard to believe the USA or UK will care about that as even HK doesn't seem to care.
Also, my last passport was so worn out, that the United States lettering and Eagle had completely faded. It was just a blank dark blue cover. No one cared about that either.
