Thx @tommann.
ooh ooh ooh...
Would someone like to post (aka start a new thread) on ice cream recipes? I'm tired of KFC and McDonalds (or is it MacDonalds?), too lazy (inconvenient) to hit DQ, and Metro is a paint to get to (cuz I have to use KM Taxis - see other rants for $#%!@ on KM Taxis).
@tommann Totally happens to us all. Nice guys turn into Mr. Hydes in these forums at times. I've done similar things and then regretted it later, being as I am really such a sweet, charming lovable guy normally. I bought a little container of Hagen Dass (s.p.?) once at Carreffoure or Walmart (forget) and it was really expensive, but I wanted some strawberry ice cream. When I opened it it had all of this freezer frost inside and tasted weird, like it had thawed out and then refroze a few times. Could not finish it. There is some shop on the streets with a New Zealand brand ice cream and it is not bad at all. I forget the name but there is one near that Dona Donut place on Jian She Lu. One scoop (yi qiu) is like 18 RMB and two is only a few kuai more. They have pecans and caramel flavor! last time I went though (can't avoid bitching a little) the girl said they had no large cones, and I pointed to them on the table next to her and she seemed to awaken from her dream with a dream state and stared at them for a moment as if they had materialized suddenly from an alternate universe or something and then went "you" (有), not seeming to realize that she was total dork. Also, seems the little Einstein had forgot to plug in the ice cream refrigerator and the ice cream in the one I wanted was all soft and runny, but I got a double slimy "scoop" anyway and was almost happy for a moment. No, no I take that back. I remember, I was actually happy.
tommann; my hat's off to you. I hope I wasn't too hard on you. I only wanted to point out that we all have to be cautious about presuming facts that may not, in reality, be accurate. In this case, the presumption that since one may be looking for ice cream they don't eat Chinese food. I've been in China since 2005 and I love the food but I also, occasionally, desire something familiar to my homeland (although ice cream is a global commodity). Ironically, I'm looking for the Dreyers ice cream for my girlfriend who is....you guessed it-Chinese.
Kudos to you my friend for coming forth with such honesty.

I don't see a problem with indulging in western stuff. But trying to hunt down specific brands? I don't know.
did you manage to find the dreyers? how long did it take you? how far across the city did you have to go to get it?
what's your next project? trying to hunt down an Oh Henry chocolate bar?
I think a quick look in a SE like yahoo or google may help with the milk and cream and to add or not add a yolk or whole egg and what others think of the many tastes. Eric
Here are links to my recipes for covering some of the most popular flavors:
www.ice-cream-recipes.com/popular_recipes.htm
Vanilla - undoubtedly the most popular flavor in history; as popular now as ever. Great on its own, in a sundae or as an accompaniment to a hot pudding or pie.
Chocolate - possibly the most popular flavor for an ice cream sundae. Putting together 2 'melt-in-the-mouth' foods like chocolate and ice cream makes for one of the most irresistable desserts ever.
Strawberry - fragant and fruity; a seasonal that makes summer well worth waiting for.
Chocolate Chip - another variation on chocolate for the many chocaholics out there.
Pecan & Maple Syrup - sweet, nutty and sticky - a glorious ice cream on its own or with your favorite hot pudding.
Banana - quick and easy to make, a great treat any time
Butter Pecan - creamy and nutty, it's one of the best
Honey - surprisingly popular - an evergreen flavor
Mint Choc Chip - always popular especially with children with its wonderful blend of color and flavor.

No almond flavour? Thumb down!
Just yesterday I saw a recipe that begged to be tried. It's got three big plusses. First it doesn't use any eggs or egg custard base, second the recipe claims it isn't icy and third, an ice cream churn isn't needed. For me a fourth bonus is that it uses one of Pooh Bear's and my favourite foods.
Downside? You must have an electric beater (200 kuai on Taobao) or a full relay team of strong arms.
1 litre cream (don't waste your time with N***** cream or any of the creams that are less than 40 kuai a litre. they never whip properly.)
1 can condensed milk
Vanilla or any other flavour.
Beat everything together and freeze in a covered container.
I tried it and my verdict is that it's good, a little icy, the condensed milk flavour is less obvious than I thought it would be. Good with an apple pie, fruit or dessert but I'm not sure I'd want to eat a tub of it by itself. Nobody could accuse it of tasting like a frozen milk dessert.
I did see an ice-cream maker in Metro, in the catering equipment section. Can't remember the price.
Afraid that if I made my own icecream I would get too fat.
My favourite flavour of all time was pistachio nut fudge.
Other classics, Rum 'n Raisin flavour.
But it is hard to beat a good vanilla.
