Apart from the infant formula we shipped to last 6 months and the use of local egg yolks what are other people doing for baby food?
Chinese made with western brand products?
Make your own?
Buying from USA or Europe and shipping to China?
(Given the baby food scandals my wife votes for the added expense))
My wife is Chinese and does not like me to risk eating some Chinese foods that may be counterfiet. The baby is a higher risk so shipping in some products for a few months to be safe and keep her happy and the baby healthy might be the better option.
Comments or alternatives? Western made (Not just branded) in Kunming?
Eric
I am sure I have seen foreign brand junior meals in supermarkets, in jars. I am not sure if these are imported though.
However, my mother and my sister never bought baby foods. You really can make your own. Blenders are common in China now. Puréed veg and rice, and a little meat. Puréed stewed fruit. I seem to remember that Heinz baby fruit puddings used to also have rice in them.
Kids like dairy, but be careful as a lot of yoghurt here has a lot of sugar in it. Your wife can check the carb content on the food label. High carb yog = high sugar yog. Or you can make your own, yogurt makers in Metro now are about 65rmb for the 1 liter model. Just add a little jam for fruit flavor, kids will usually take to a little sweetness to begin with.
Just remember that whatever you give a baby, any change in food usually results in them spitting it out, until they get used to the new experience.

I agree with the above post that doing your own blending is the best way to go. However for our son we did also sometimes use the jars of domestically produced Heinz savoury baby food from Walmart, and had no problems.
Dairy though has of course had quality issues with domestic products, so we have used imported formula or milk products. Even imported products can have issues as we have seen recently, but I presume the affected brand from NZ has already been pulled from the shops.
Final word on dairy - what mother produces is the best! (As long as she is reasonably careful with her own diet). Don't be too quick to stop feeding baby, even after 12 months there are still some benefits. Nothing shop-bought can compare.
At least in NZ case it was a genuine mistake and they fessed up and did something about it, even though it would hurt the business.
Unlike other cases of deliberate tampering.
Note
The nestle people called and spoke to my wife.
No meat baby food in China. Only local production of fruit, vegetable, and or grain.
The spokesperson even agreed the way to get it was have it sgipped like we did our daughters formula,

Heinz have just a few with meats, eg:
shop.heinz.com.cn/goods.php?id=148
But still better to blend your own meals. Buy your meat where you (or your wife) feel comfortable with the quality, such as Metro or Wicker Basket. Perhaps some other people can suggest where to buy reliable quality meat. Baby can then eat the same meals as you - just that baby's serving is pureed!
Blend it yourself - Kunming is rife with fruit. Work your way up slowly to rice and meats (fish, pork, chicken, beef, etc?). We're replacing our aged and almost broken rice cooker with a combo rice/pressure cooker - to speed up the beef stew (et al) process. In theory, that should make meats ultra super mega tender (like fall apart tender) - suitable for the kiddies....and old folk.
Thanks
I will mention making our own puree again to my wife.
This is also what the Weston A Price and Nurishing Traditions people suggest.

I would recommend making your own. There are things that aren't 100% true when it comes to buying pre-made bottles of baby food. In a bottle of babyfood from the store that says "Meat and peas" there really is no meat in them... they have a filler they put in the bottles so they can make more. So the majority of "meat and peas" is really 99% peas and 1% meat. So babies aren't getting to amount of protein they really need. So yes, I would recommend making your own!

We use egg yolks mixed with milk or formula shipped from the USA.
One of my wifes relatives purees baby food so she has agreed this is an acceptable meat/protein feeding to augment the milk/formula and egg yolks.
Thanks Eric
