ATM cards in neighboring countries?

lesterness (57 posts) • 0

Can anyone tell me if an ATM from Construction Bank, Agricultural Bank, Bank of China or Post Office Bank can be used to withdraw money in Hong Kong? In Laos? In Thailand? In Vietnam?

There are lots of rumors and lots of statements of what "ought" to be, but can anyone tell me if they have actually been able to use their Chinese bank account on a visit to one of the neighboring countries?

Thanks.

I have used my Union Pay card (normal bank card from CCB) in Thailand to withdraw Thai Baht.

The card can also be used to buy things in HK using a POS machine.

I went to Laos last year and used an ATM machine in Vang Vieng using my Bank of China card and got Laos Kip, and it even gave me my bank account in Lao Kip. I was holding my breath that it would work, but it did fine.

If the card says "can only be used in China" then this means the card can't be used outside of mainland China, not even in Hong Kong. I wouldn't even count on Bank of China overseas ATMs accepting "can only be used in China" Bank of China cards.

Only Union Pay or Visa/Mastercard cards issued by Chinese banks, that don't have this restriction can be used at ATMs abroad.

I have personally used my Chinese account(union pay) in Laos, Thailand and Vietnam in the past 2-3 months.

CCB has it's own branches in HK. Called CCB Asia. My China CCB atm card worked at their machines fine. I didn't bother testing at other machines, but I would assume HK is very Chinese atm friendly
