Hi everybody! Starting from september i will be studying chinese language at the Southwest Forestry University in Kunming. I won a scolarship, so I didnt choose this institution and I know nothing about it. Does somebody has some info to give me about this university? Like how is the accomodation provided, the teaching etc? thanks

Try using wikipedia.org to look for their website...or google.com, or bing.com....

It's a rather large university - even by Chinese standards - but the teaching is rather uniform throughout China - but if you approach with the intention of enjoying everything - learning lots by yourself - you should have both a great experience and learn lots...the school doesn't make the student - the student makes the school (my philosophy).

Agree with @laotou on this one. Allow the uni to set the very structured framework, and self study, and enjoy the opportunity to experience China that you have now.
99% of universities offer the same quality of teaching, which for most people is not so satisfactory. The strength of the Chinese education method is also its weakness, it is very structured. It relies on rote learning, but for vocab, that is essential anyway.

As Mark Twain said, 'I never let my schooling get in the way of my education'.

This is a bit of a random question. Google maps shows there is a White Dragon Pool (白龙潭) inside the Forestry University. Does this place still exist or has it been demolished?

If you use google chrome, you can translate webpages automatically, providing it is text, not jpeg.
However, most unis have a webpage that only contains basic information about how good they are. Not really informative.

@scally

I rode around this uni last year, and if there was a White Dragon Pool, it's either not there, mislabeled, or unimpressive. Don't remember anything besides a nice view. Also, I don't think bikes are allowed inside, but I rode in when guard was away I guess.

I'm a student graduate from this university and my home is near this uni too. First, I'd like to say something that you guys mentioned above. There's no White Dragon Pool in the uni and the bikes are allowed inside.

The university is quite big, but there are not so many foreign students here, at least there weren't when i was there.

I'm no so clear about the teaching, if you are here to learn Chinese, I think it cannot be too bad. ^_^
The accommodation here is fairly good. There's an independent building called International Exchange Center especially for foreign teachers and students. One of our foreign friends lived there and we usually went there to have a party or something. It's nice.
