Good Chinese Movies?

Some of Ang Li's earlier movies are worth dusting off, including "The Wedding Banquet" and "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman," though the former is set in New York with a mix of Chinese and English dialogue and the former is set in Taiwan.

I also thoroughly enjoyed "World without thieves" and also "Aftershock" which is about the huge earthquake in Tangshan years ago.

There is a great new movie called Personal Tailor 私人订制 directed by
Feng Xiaogang and starring Ge You. It's hilarious and amazing that they allow the themes shown as they are mocking some current issues in a very direct way but through comedy. We were surprised!

All the Gong Li movies and all the Zhang Yimou movies, with the exception of 'Hero' which, though beautifully made, justifies any sort of bloody imperialism as long as it 'unifies' (read: conquers) what has since become China. Ang Li is also a wonderful director. Also the director of 'City of Sadness', who made several fine films, although I can't remember his name right now.

Hong Kong movies, look for those directed by Ann Hui. And in many ways I like John Woo's over-the-top Hong Kong 'choreographed violence' films better than some of those he has made in the U.S. (e.g., 'The Killer', 'Bullet in the Head' - though they won't be to everyone's taste). And Chen Kaige's films.
Nope, I haven't seen any Chinese films recently.

Ashes of Time (if you like maddeningly artsy classical martial arts films with many famous HK stars, intricately complicated and occasionally (frequently?) disjointed plot lines, but really really epic cinematography.

There's also a reasonably interesting contemporary martial arts drama film called "The Four - (episode 2?).
