I stayed at the international students dorm at YNNU and I have to say, it sucked.
I was going to study Chinese at YNNU but I just couldn't sleep at night. The dorm was right next to a busy highway and all I heard all night were cars driving by and loud noises. I finally had enough and one day I just booked a one-way flight to Hong Kong and left. I said the heck with that place.
Also, the administration in the international students office were not friendly or helpful.
I believe that overseas students for Yunnan University are still housed and schooled at the old main campus by Green Lake, which is a plus.
Also, over the past few years, Yunnan University has been built up as a major center for training Chinese language teachers for all over South and Southeast Asia. You may still get a lot of classes taught by grad students, but the guy in charge of devising the training program and Chinese curriculum is top notch.
Having said that, you don't come to China for the quality of teaching. Most of the best Chinese language programs are still in the West, particularly North America.
What you're really here for is the language environment. Even if the best Chinese teacher in the world was at YNU or YNNU, it wouldn't be worth if you were going to spend all your free time sipping lattes at Salvador's instead of immersing yourself in the local environment.
The majority of overseas students is in Chenggong campus of YNNU.
There is still a group in the main campus on Yi Er Yi Da Jie, but I've heard that they will be also moved to Chenggong campus.
For schools that still have downtown campuses, it doesn't make any sense to move the foreign students out to Chengong. You're far away from the culture of Kunming, as well as everything that has earned it a reputation among foreigners. With the kinds of rates foreign students pay, why risk losing them like that?
Then why me and several hundreds of foreigners are in Chenggong campus of YNNU? Same for YNU -plenty of overseas students in Chenggong.
I don't know, I guess I'd much prefer to be in the old university area. Chenggong is so far from just about everything that makes Kunming nice.
The dormitories won't matter to me as I already live off campus, but studying at Chenggong would be too far. Which group of students is still at the Yi Er Yi campuses? The non-degree students? (that's what I would be)
Anybody also have any feedback about the actual teaching, class schedule, etc.? When are the classes usually held?
Thanks!
Non degree is in kunming, degree is in CG from what i've heard. YNU MOST foreigners are in kunming no matter degree/non
Non-degree also in Chenggong, I'm guessing half in CG half in 121dajie.
Classes for days a week, 8:30-12:00 and sometimes in the afternoon from 1:40. One weekday free, if you are lucky monday or friday.
