Hi Rose!
I also think about studying at Yunnan Normal. I have been in touch with them many times writing e-mails. Did you contact them in Chinese or English? The following address always worked for me when I used Chinese: icisynnu@yahoo.com.cn
As far as I know, all you have to do to apply is fill out the application form and pay the registration fee.

We might meet in November (I plan to start a bit later...)

Hi there,

I also will study there in fall semester. The Wai Shi Ban there is absolutely friendly and helpful. The emailsadress nicefreak mentioned is the right one. You also can call them: 0871-5516228. If your chinese is not good enough, they speak a pretty good english.

When are you planning on going to Kunming?

I also plan to study there next semester, do you know when begin the semester and what is the number of hours/week?

I plan to go in Kunming August the 2nd, to visit the school. Is the language department already/still open?

I don't have any answer to by mail for now... (in English)

I am going to attend Yunnan Normal University as well this fall. I think the semester starts around Aug 24th. I think you can take small classes or classes by your self. I'm not sure how many hours per week, but I would guess anywhere from 14-20. Good luck

I am also planning to study at YNNU this semester, but just heard about explosions on buses... Should I be too worried, or do they think it will be safe after the Olympics?

I studied at YNNU about three years ago. Many of my friends who studied elsewhere were jealous of how "foreigner friendly" it was. The staff are great and it is easy to get involved on campus. I played on the teachers' team for the university volleyball tourney. You will love the place! In fact I'm coming back in the fall to study a little bit and to visit.

As far as bombs and such, I wouldn't worry. Foreigners are not usually targets.
