Yep! Lots of this sort of action is down to local flavor. Every city/Prov seems to have its own policy priorities.

Try to rotate the VPN server you connect to. Some days Hong Kong will get 6+ mbps, other days barely 1 mbps. I've noticed Hong Kong, and western US slow down the most. Servers in Central US seem to be ok for me. They aren't as fast as usual, but at least they stay connected.
If I don't care about speed, and just want a constant connection all day then I'll connect to some small country in Europe.
I wrote to Witopia Support about the fact I could connect using different VPN clients to the SAME server (for example, I could connect on the iPad to LA but not on my laptop). Here's the reply:
China has locked down a lot of locations due to their government meetings.. this is affecting ALL vpn companies.. you will have to test various locations and protocols to see what is working for you... it is varying from location to location inside china which ones are working. This should resolve itself once the communist congress stops meeting in a week or so. This is NOT targeted to WiTopia, we are hearing from all providers and they are all having the same issues.
strange, my express vpn is working fine. just disconnects every now and then but other than that no problem.
I'm finally connected. Support suggested a few changes, like connecting to the server by ip address rather than DNS and using a different port. I suspect random blockages to DNS or perhaps even specific ip addresses may have been the problem, but the keepers of the firewall can't possibly have enough time to catch them all.
i have had problems with my vpn losing connection at least 2-3 times daily for past several weeks. For almost 2 days had no problems and this afternoon it disconnected and cannot get it to reset. Also google seems totally froze up and so i have been using baidu and even yahoo has been working really well. vpn asks me to check my firewall settings but i have changed nothing.
I've had good VPN speeds(2-5Mb/s) and connectivity for the past 2 or 3 weeks (at least). China Unicom ADSL, StrongVPN, Green Lake area.
My VOIP system has had issues connecting to the servers back in the US though...Still troubleshooting why.
They are in the middle of selecting the new political leaders. Just be patient and it will resume again.
Wondering if anyone else is having problems with their VPN right now. I got frustrated with Gotrusted several weeks ago and switched to Express. Worked great until Dec 5th and then like someone turned off a switch. Did what they said and yesterday able to connect and now again problems. Seems like in blanket message from Express aimed at China users they do not have a definitive solution. Give us several things to try. I did not grow up with computers and am not very savvy so this is very frustrating for me.
I am also getting lots of problems with google.
There is either a crackdown on vpn or something is bubbling away in the news somewhere.
