Hi everyone, I'm heading to Thailand in the next 2 weeks and i was wondering where can i get the yellow fever vaccine? and how much is it?
Can I add a query of where to get Malaria meds (Larium, ideally) as I head to Bangladesh. I tried chemists but no luck. Would hospitals stock it? Or Centre for Disease Control?
Why would you need a Yellow Fever vaccination? Yellow Fever "has never been reported in Asia" says the WHO who should know (www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs100/en/ ).
Proof of YF vaccination is required if arriving from an affected area, such as Latin America or Africa, but not from China.
To be fair, the full WHO quote is a little less reassuring...
"Although the disease has never been reported in Asia, the region is at risk because the conditions required for transmission are present there."
@Ocean, I think you should speak to a proper health care professional.
Lariam was a popular malaria prevention some twenty years ago when the side-effects were much less studied. It is not something they would give you in the UK anymore for prevention.
There are anti-malarial regimes with much less side-effects than Lariam.
@Ocean,
that's why the YF vaccination is required when arriving from affected areas. You cannot get YF inside Asia, but Asia could get YF from someone arriving from outside.
@Ludwig. Fair point about the YF vaccination
Thanks too for for malaria advice. I was actually given Lariam from the UK 6 years ago and it is mentioned as suitable for Bangladesh in this website I looked at:
www.mdtravelhealth.com/destinations/asia/bangladesh.php
However, I'm aware these things change fast and I'd be happy with any suitable malarial prevention meds. Just not sure from where to buy. Appreciate your help.
I am not a doctor, but I think in the UK they give you either Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) or Doxycycline nowadays, which are also recommended on the page you mention. Either might be easier to find in China.
I took Lariam for a longer while some twenty years back and then bought some ten years ago over the counter in Bangkok which gave me some of the side-effects associated with Lariam in a really bad way. It stopped when I stopped taking the pills. So even if you have taken Lariam before it does not mean you will not suffer from the effects now. Searching for side effects of Lariam gives you pretty horrific stories, such as edition.cnn.com/2004/HEALTH/05/19/lariam/. AFAIK, Roche has stopped marketing Lariam for malaria prevention.
ludwig, well I'm from South America, I've been living in China for 2 years, so in order to go to Thailand i just need to give them the paper or certificate that says that i got the vaccine(at the airport) and they will let me in, last time i went to Thailand i didn't know that (people in the thai embassy didn't explain this to me very well) cuz they said i don't need a visa, but they forgot to tell me that i need the vaccine, so it took me 30 to 45 min in the airport to check in. I want to save all the trouble that's why i want to get the vaccine.
