If you flying it may be easiest to get a visa on arrival, google it, many companies offering their services, you have to use a company to do this, can't do it yourself. Overland you'll have to visit the Vietnam embassy in Kunming, again you just google it.
Usually costs between 30-50USD, depends where you are from. Also will need a couple of color passport photos.
Last time I went to the consulate they spoke both English and Chinese. Not particularly friendly but they get the job done for 400 yuan (I think) and it takes two days to process. Pay attention to the hours they are open as the employees are quick to leave work.
Thanks for your help! I'm glad they speak some English. I googled several times over the past week but for some reason the consulate website does not load, which is why I had so many questions. Does anyone know the opening hours for visa drop off/pick up?
Visa application is normal office hours (mind the 2 hour lunch break from 12-2pm) and pick up for some strange reason is only from 4:30-5:30pm or something close on the day that they tell you to come back (I think 3-4 days later).
The application form is in English/Chinese and is pretty standard. The front deskers appear to be multilingual so you usually never have a problem (I heard one speak Chinese/English/Vietnamese and I think French in the space about 10 minutes!)
Here's some detailed current info on how to find the consulate.
