HELP! SET UP for Apple Airport Base Station

laoshi19 (30 posts) • 0

Hi,
I have a good internet connection that works with PPPoE when connected by ethernet to my laptop. I cannot get my Airport Extreme Base station to work.

My internet connection was set up yesterday. It's great fun trying to talk tech when you can't speak Chinese

I got the laptop set up. I have some kind of internet interface device the telephone company provided. I have a user name and password. I set it up so I can use the internet when I connect with ethernet to the port on the interface device (there are several but I'm not sure what it is) but when I try to set up my Airport E. Base station I can't get it to work. I've tried using the same settings (PPPoE) but it doesn't register.

I'm in the North of Kunming and haven't found any English speaking techies here yet. The internet is fast and good, just can't get my wifi working.

Anyone? Can you help? Please!

Thanks

Dude, I setup my WI-FI this week. My Chinese is really limited. Here's how I did it:

1. Brought my laptop, Kindle and Anroid phone with me when I bought the router.

2. Had the guy that sold me the router setup my SSID (name of the router) and put in the key (password) for me.

3. He then connected the devices except there was a problem with the Kindle.

4. Took everything home and physically connected everything. Used this sources to help through this part.

Micro soft: www.microsoft.com/[...]

5. I think you ran into the all Chinese when you went to 192.168.1.whatever. I knew somewhere I had to enter my username and password for my ADSL account.

I went through menu until I thought I found the right page, then entered both.

6. Then I tried to connect the router to the ADSL. It didn't seem to work. After a couple of hours and a growing sense of frustration I noticed a WI-FI icon in the tray next to the clock. WTF??? I opened my browser and I was connected.

No where does anyone say the router automatically logs in to the ADSL ISP. In fact, best I can tell, if the router is on and you boot up your computer, you are logged into the ISP.

7. I turned on my phone and it works! I played with the Kindle but it kept telling me the password was incorrect. All works well now. Next I get a tablet!

8. Kindle: I left the Kindle charging and the WI-FI turned on and went to bed. In the morning I found the Kindle had changed it's mind, was connected and had downloaded a couple of things. Since then the Kindle sometimes says it is connected but the download page tells me I need a connection(???). I just leave it with the WI-FI on and charging and the Kindle sorts it out, albeit mysteriously.

Hope you got some clues

.

On the ADSL line. You need a splitter. The wire from the wall goes in one end and there are two jacks on the other. One goes to your phone and the other to your ADSL modem (it has lights that flash and it needs a power source). My ADSL will not work unless the phone is plugged in.

You connect the modem to the router WAN jack. So it is wall to splitter to modem to router. You gotta have it in the right order and also have your phone plugged in as well.

I've got time tomorrow - PM your mobile. Trade you airport extreme tutorial for coffee or tea. If you're in a rush - disconnect the ethernet cable and do the following steps. As an alternative, you can read the included (in your installation DVD) installer guide or go here while connected to your internet via the ethernet cable:

LINK
www.google.com/[...]

VAGUE SETUP INSTRUCTIONS
1. Your airport extreme should have come with an installation DVD.

2. If you're on a PC, install the sw, then go to START>ALL PROGRAMS>AIRPORT. If you're on a Mac, launch the AIRPORT UTILITY in the UTILITIES folder, which is inside your APPLICATIONS folder. Go thru the auto-config sequence.
3. Your laptop/pc should start the auto-config application for the airport and auto-connect to the router.

4. Follow the instructions - Give it the router/base station a name (eg laoshi19 base station) and give your wifi network a name (aka laoshi19). Setup wpa2 with a reasonably secure password (!@#$%^&)+upper AND lower case A-Z + numbers 0-9 - not necessarily in that order. Try not to use your own personal info - use something obscure like your mother/father b-day if you must.
5. If all went well, you should be connected to your new airport wirelessly.

The airports are nice because you can actually pseudo-hide the SSID aka airport name - makes it less hackable (not unhackable - just more troublesome than most regular wifi routers).

As for the splitter - you probably already have that otherwise you wouldn't be able to connect to the internet via the ethernet cable.

The only prob you have is you need to connect your laptop (pc or mac?) to the router via wifi, so the above VAGUE INSTRUCTIONS should work or download the apple (link provided) and try to muddle thru it yourself. Shouldn't be too difficult as the tech has already setup your router (maybe).

ENJOY.

CAVEAT
Sometimes the phone company will disable your account if they suspect you're using a wireless router - that's old news since most everyone provides wifi routers with the ADSL modem these days. The phone company provided internet thingy is called the DSL or ADSL modem...or nowadays, simply the modem.

OK, Thanks but I should have posted more info.

I am on a Mac running OS 10.7.4.

I'm not a novice user but the setup is not working.

Most of you are on PC's and so some of what you sent does not apply. The Airport Extreme is ridiculously easy to set up but there could be a block from the Telecom company. That may be the problem. The setup I have is using PPPoE. If you don't know what that is then I don't think you can help. I'm assuming this is ADSL service because of the telephone connection. That does give me another clue. If they somehow can detect and refuse a wifi router then that's the problem. I've never heard of that before.

I'm accustomed to setting up from a modem or a cable box.

I use the Apple Airport software to see and configure the ADSL modem. I can see the modem and attempt the setup but it's not allowing the same setup for the router. It should but it doesn't. I don't need any CD's as I've done this a few times here in China including in Xiamen where I last lived.

Thanks for the suggestions. So far though, no joy...

I use macs predominantly and expletive PCs for certain types of software (example IBM Rational Suite).

Again - it's MUCH easier for ME to just look at your setup. We can skip the coffee tea thing. I'm feeling altruistic for Friday.

OPTION 1
Are you connected to the airport extreme? Does your wifi connection show up in the menu bar? The AIRPORT UTILITY should have done that for you.
OPTION 2
It's possible your airport extreme isn't holding the settings (rare, but possible).

OPTION 3
I've ALSO had probs with OS X upgrades obliterating the wifi card drivers - did you update your software lately (since you're on 10.7.4, the latest release). You MAY want to try re-installing the 10.7.4 combined update again - see if that fixes the prob. It's rare - but I've experienced that prob on TWO mac laptops when I upgraded to snow leopard (10.6.x). DOWNLOAD a fresh copy if you have the time.

But again - it's MUCH easier for ME if I just look at it (and I'll be bringing my own 10.7.4 macbook over - i'm on the way to work - so that should help as a sanity check).

Hi,

I'm also having WiFI trouble, can someone please help!!

Our internet stopped working last week. We called China Mobile they came out to look at it, said there was no problem with the interent (he hooked my mac up via PPoE) and said it must be the wireless router which is not his responsibility and left after being a total a**hole to my housemate.

So we bought another one. A friend set it up for us with user/pass etc, but it still won't work. When its hooked up i get the AirPort connected icon and it says everything is working fine but it just doesn't work. Phone and splitter connected.

Can anyone help please!?

Cheers.
