Kunming/Jinghong/Lao border.

I wanted to get some information on the bus from Kunming to Jinghong.

I want to go in the daytime so I can see the countryside between Kunming and the Lao border. Basically Jinghong is just going to be a rest stop before entering Laos itself. I know their is an all night bus into Laos, but again, I want to see southern Yunnan. I wish they had a train there.

First, is Jinghong really worth it or is it better to just go all the way to Laos and by pass it altogether? From what I have seen, Jinghong is there for Chinese who want to stay in China but feel like they are in Thailand (if that makes sense). To me, it is a layover spot unless I am really missing something.

If I stopped in Jinghong, where would I get the bus to Mengla and Laos itself? I will be in Laos and Vietnam for 2-3 weeks so I dont think I want to be in Jinghong that long, just a place to rest and maybe walk around for the evening and then the next day go to Lao.

Has anyone done this?

The bus to Jinhong isn't that exciting view wise. I would rather spend the day in Jinhong rather than on the bus. However, I understand your thinking, since I sometimes just the same need to see the territory I am crossing.

If you can squeeze in a day, Jinhong is worth it. You could always stopover on the way back too. Of course, Laos and Vietnam are both great destinations, so if you skip Jinhong for more time in those countries, that's well worth it too.

HFCAMPO, goKM's most prolific link spammer at work again.

@crazy,laowai
Did you even click on the links? They provide useful information about the OP's question.

If I had asked the OP's question I would have been told to search the forum first or use google. HFCAMPO does not answer the OP's question and instead uses this forum for link spamming. If he wants to advertise, he should pay.

@crazy.laowai. It's not spam. He's not selling anything. He's informing those who otherwise wouldn't know. Not that I need to defend him but if you have read his earlier posts before you came along, you would know he does many things because he loves sharing knowledge and useful information. The key word being 'useful'. Another thing, the moderator stated: "Users who would like to share information published elsewhere should include a hyperlink instead of copying text verbatim." Just my 2 cents. Peace!
