I am currently living in Canada, and I would like to move back to Dali. Only this time, I would like to bring all of my personal belongings with me. What is an economical way of going about this? Is it possible to have somebody dump freight container off in the driveway for me to load everything myself?

Don't know about economical. We had a lot of things moved from Toronto and had to pay for a half container at a cost of about $2,600. They picked up the stuff and loaded the container at their warehouse. It took about 4 months to arrive!

@AC
Shipping containers BACK to china are dirt cheap - something to do with the trade imbalance. MOST shipping containers coming BACK to China are empty. You MAY want to talk to someone in logistics though as you will have visa, customs, and immigration issues shipping your crud.

I think half a container would be more than sufficient for my needs, I live in a studio/bachelor apartment. $2600 sounds like a hell of bargain to me. Also, waiting several months for the container to arrive is no problem at all. AlPage48, what year did you do your move, and by chance to you remember the name of the company? Also, were any of your items damaged or missing on arrival?

Samsun, thanks for the info.

We used Wi-Can International in Scarborough, Ont. Cost was $2,450 (I looked it up).

We moved in February of 2010. There was no damage to contents but a few cardboard boxes got beat up. We did have some fragile goods but we took care packing them and they were all properly labelled.

We used AMJ Campbell International and Santa Fe together. The cost was quite a bit higher than $2450 and was full service. They came and packed everything for us and delivered everything to our door at the other end. Also took several months.. Pretty sure we wouldn't have used more than half a container either. Feeling a bit ripped off now :)

AlPage48: do you know who Wi-Can International used as their local partner? Might be cheaper to deal with them directly.

Caeruleus: I have no idea who the local partner was. I suspect it may change from time to time anyway. Wi-Can was a Canadian-Chinese owned business that specialized in shipping between Canada and China.

Also important to note that the shipping charge was door-to-door but would be extra if we didn't have an elevator at this end - and we didn't. It cost an additional 500 RMB to get the 46 heavy boxes carted up 6 floors but I could not have done it myself so that was OK by me.
