Hey guys, me and some friends are going to Shilin soon and I've read different things about how to get there. Since we have a tight budget we would like to get there cheap, and avoid to hire a car with driver. Is there any train going nowadays and how much is it roughly? Is it better to take a bus?

If you have several people go to Shilin, it would be a better choice to hire a car because it's much more convenient even though it's more expensive.
Instead of hiring a car, you can take bus or train there. But I recommend bus. There are lots of buses to Shilin every day. So you don't have to book the tickets first.
How to go there:
1. Start from around 08:30 am, taking a taxi to Kunming Eastern Bus Station (昆明东部汽车客运站), then buy the ticket of Kunming - Shilin 昆明 - 石林 and to to Shilin immediately. Normally you need to wait for around 15 - 30 minutes to catch the bus.
2. Start from around 08:00 am, taking bus No. 22 at the bus stop of Yunnan Normal University (depends on where you stay, maybe you need to transfer bus), and get off at Kunming Eastern Bus Station (昆明东部汽车客运站)。Then buy the ticket and take bus to Shilin.

1. Take a bus from the Eastern Bus Station in Kunming to the Shi Lin Ke Yuan Zhan Bus Station located on Dong Shan Road in Shi Lin. (80 KM)
2. Take Bus #5 (RED bus) from the Shi Lin Bus Station directly to the main gate of the Stone Forest for 2 Yuan. (10 KM)
TICKETS to Stone Forest are 175 Yuan. I prefer an annual ticket for 200 Yuan for a 1 year membership. Bring your passport or photo ID to purchase the 1 year membership.
The Stone Forest is Kunming's most visited scenic spot. Unfortunately, there are so many tourists here that it is difficult to enjoy or photograph. The price of admission also includes admission to the Black Stone Forest. This is the best place to go as there are very few visitors there. Black Stone Forest is 6 km from the Major Stone Forest.

You may take the bus, or rent a car to Shilin. If you have the Chinese driving license, you can drive yourself, or else you will need a driver, fee is about 500-600RMB.

From the East Bus Station in Kunming - Be sure to be clear when purchasing your tickets.
You can get tickets to the Shi Lin Ke Yuan Zhan Bus Station located on Dong Shan Road in Shi Lin or you can get tickets that go directly to the New Stone Forest Bus Terminal. This new bus station is just 300 meters from the ticket office so you will save time.
