Am I the only one to be shocked by Top One's add ?

It states "Every night up to 20% discount for foreigners"... I am a foreigner myself, but I still find that kind of discrimination pretty shocking...

I remember we had the same discussion around 3 years ago with Cargo Club.

The clubs know its cheaper for rich Chinese to buy drinks for foreigners than 小姐 so they are trying to get more options for their customers

As the one that responsible to this add,

if u went out to kundu in the last few month, the benefits that foreigners get "off the record" is way much more than what we offer. Kundu still suffers from 2010 events when people scared to go there. so they/we try to get foreigners trust again。

don't be that noble, specially if you are not connected to the reality

Offer

@Tianli
Not sure if you are a local or an ex-pat but I don't see any problem with their marketing, I don't think it's discriminatory or racist. Promotional discounts are used to alter the behavior of consumers. If a business feels they need to use certain strategies to promote their business, as long as they do it tactfully then I'm fine with it. You see this all around the world. For example, here in China there are all sorts of discounts for different segments of the population, military, senior citizens, students, etc, for clubs in the States, the admission fee is usually lower for ladies than it is for the men, if any at all.

So, to offer discounts to foreigners just signifies that they feel they need to have more foreigners hanging around Kundu and that it is good for business, how is that discriminatory? Or do you mean it is discriminatory only because you can't enjoy the discount?

Cheers~

laotou, i'm pretty sure the word 'discrimination' usually has negative connotations. Or were you trying to make funny? If so, 'ha ha ha'. Etc.

In regard to the original post, a 20% discount wouldn't get me within a mile of Top One. In fact, they could give me free beer and i still wouldn't go there. In fact, they could actually offer to pay me, lot's of money, and i still wouldn't go there. They could roll out the red carpet, shower me with the prettiest women on earth, the finest wine known to man, truffles, diamonds, fame, glory, and all the god damn pleasures known to man, and i still wouldn't go there. It's horrid. It's a neon nightmare. It's where music goes to die. It's sister club is Abu Ghraib, which is really all you need to know.

i dont want talk shit about top one but i have to,anyway it used to be my best club in kundu that time, now is a crappy club who think now they should employ foreigners to attracts other foreigners.last week i passed by that discount they are talking about is giving u crappy and low quality beers. thats not the way to attract laowai's.you change your djs everytime, new ones just play stupit music, locals cannot know is crap but laowais knows.infact you should stop advertising it in gokunming it will never make a different.just a point of view.

Tianli, western clubs have ladies' night all the time. It's to attract more ladies into the clubs and bars. If there are no ladies, then guys will go somewhere else, and the club gets no business.

Top One and other Chinese clubs get foreigners occasionally, and they'd like to have more in there. Some Chinese people think that the club with the most foreigners is a hip place to be, and will go there to drink and party.

As you know, most Chinese are shy when talking with foreigners. They may have excellent English yet still worry about expressing themselves well. With the help of our glorious friend alcohol, they become less inhibited and more curious and talkative, and many want to show Chinese hospitality to foreigners and buy them drinks, even expensive drinks. In America and other Western countries, the more sexy ladies there are, the more men clamor to buy them drinks. Altogether this translates into more business for the bar. This is a discount that applies to foreigners, giving us a CHEAPER price. This is good for foreigners, and good for the bar, or else they wouldn't do it. Now, I will tell you what the word you used, "discrimination" really means, so I can spare you the trouble of looking it up. Examples help more than a real definition anyway.

Tianli, I advise you not to go to Tuodong Swimming pool near Tuodong stadium. The price for single admissions is usually 20 yuan, but it is 30 yuan for foreigners. This is posted on the wall, and when you bitch about it, the cashier points to the sign. So we know that it is official business to RAISE the price for foreigners. When you try to bargain for things, you'll get a higher original price if you're a foreigner, and the merchant usually settles only at a higher price than what Chinese people would pay. This is especially pronounced if your Chinese language skills are weak. Furthermore, high-earning foreigners with work visas and official salaries are now going to be taxed to pay into China's social security system, even though most foreigners bring in far more money than they take out of the country, and will probably never use the social security system anyway. That's not exactly as discriminatory as the above two examples, but it is unfair in my opinion.

Tianli, the above mentioned things are discrimination. A 20% discount at a bar is nothing to bitch about, and it is certainly not discrimination. Yes, you are judged based on the color of your skin. Welcome to earth.
