I need to send a couple of letters home (Europe). What is the fastest way, what will it cost me, where do I go and how long will it generally take?
The documents actually have to be there by October 4 but I realise this will be almost impossible.

Bring your passport to the local post office - send EMS (chinese version of fedex/dhl). It's cheaper - usually reliable.
dammit, my visa is being extended so no passport. I will try with my driving licence and a copy of my passport. Hope that works out. I hope they manage to deliver in time, thank you for the info.
Wow, 220 kuai for a couple of documents is not my idea of cheap. That's the same amount I paid for a FedEx or DHL delivery last time I used it. But alright, EMS better get it there by early next week. OR ELSE!

PO in Kunming capitalizes on the until recently absence of fedex & dhl. FYI - Fedex is now in kunming - you can check out if their prices are/were competitive with ¥220 for future ref. I think they also have english speakers on their toll free line and they'll pick up and deliver door to door.
The PO can also do this - but requires chinese language abilities...

You posted the request on 28 September and still have not acted on sending your document that needed to be there on 4 October. In the mean time, you've lost 2 days out of 6!
IF IT'S SO IMPORTANT, 220 Yuan should not be a stumbling block and stop procrastinating. Even if you act on it on Friday, 30 September, I doubt EMS, DHL, FedEx or any such service will be able to get your documents there in 4 days time! You had a slim chance with 6 days but even 10 time 220 Yuan will do you no good now.
Your only option is to search for flights to your destination city from Kunming and ask one of the passengers or flight crew (and offer him/her a reasonable fee or gratuity) to hand carry the documents (provided they are not illegal) to be delivered to someone prearranged (a relative or friend) at the other end to receive them and then act on your behalf.
where did you read that I didn't already post it? No need to behave like my mother, I took care of it this (Thursday) morning. I was just writing my findings because, you know, it's the internet and people want to read results and not only the questions.
Anyway, DHL are able to get the letter there within 3 business days' time. I hope EMS is too.
