GUINNESS - should I get my hopes up?

oyarsa (17 posts) • 0

in seeing the banner ad for the "draught guinness" I'm at once excited and ready to be let down... has anyone had one from this place (Moses)? price, feelings? There is only one review from 2009 and it's not exactly positive...

I want to believe...

Since I was the person who recommended (twisted their arm) Moses to get it in, I feel responsible to post a reply. The bar itself may certainly not be to everyones tastes, though at least it's clean, and the staff polite and honest. The third floor plays quiet lounge music, though after nine they normally have a live solo jazz singer.

As to the beer, it would be true to say they have had some issues. These have related to a combination of inconsistent quality gas, and altitude. Last week they flew in a specialist from Chengdu, and these problems seems to have been resolved. I did have a friend go in a few weeks ago whose pint was excessively frothy. The staff did their best to resolve the issue without fuss, so they do seem to have the right attitude and the manager really does care about pouring a quality pint.
Cost off the top of my head is 60 a pint. Given what it costs to get in this is in my opinion very reasonable, though I understand others may disagree.

They are opening a garden area on a roof next month which has a view over Green lake.

The Guinness is good and cold, 60 kuai is a decent price for it, think it costs 70-80 at bars in other cities in China. It gave me a good, energetic buzz that felt different to the beers that I'm used to hehe. In the visits I've made there I prefer the quieter atmosphere of Blue Bird on the third floor to Moses's club-like feeling but maybe that was just the mood I was in when I went. Will definitely be going back!

I went at St Patrick's Day and the Guinness was pretty tasty, but the atmosphere is definitely not one in which you expect to be enjoying a pint of stout.

WOW! 60 kuai a pint? It would have to come with a lap dance to justify that price.

I just moved from Kunming to Xiamen. I still go back and forth, but after being in Xiamen a few months, it gets harder to put up with the Kunming BS. I can sit oceanside at the Me & You cafe and order a 12" pizza and a draft Guinness for..........50 kuai. Ice cold, fresh, and the pizza is exactly correct. Thin crust and crispy delicious! Not the rubbery shit with hot dog, cucumbers, beans, tofu, jelly and all the other BS Kunming places pour on top. Kunming has a long way to go before it is just more than an overgrown farmer village. BTW, people in Xiamen are actually very friendly and educated way beyond the 4th grade.

"I'm lovin it!"
