I just bought a filing cabinet but now need to find a stationary store where I can buy files that "hang" in it.
Can anyone suggest:
1. Specific name of store supplying hanging files
2. Area of Kunming where I can find one or more such stores?

Many thanks!

Let us know how you get on. I am looking for good stationary stores as well.
In my experience, we can find them in different places. One time I got them in an E-King store (the one near Baihui Shangchang) but they didn't have all sizes. The best place for me is a studying and office tools market, which is in No.176 Wu Jin Road (吴井路文化用品批发市场). There are many shops there for selling office supplies. I am not sure it is still open now because government already decided to rebuild this place.
Good luck!

Indeed, I found the hanging files on Wu Jin Road. Not sure of the street number, but the large department-like structure that once sold office supplies has indeed been closed. But a handful of decently stocked pifashang (批发商) have moved just across the street and inside the courtyard of what is marked as a Xinhua Bookstore (新化书店). I do appreciate the quick replies and hope I can help you all out soon.

My $0.02 - in asia, most companies use those A4 blue boxes to store files, which range in thickness from a few cm to up to 5-6 or more cm. I switched to these folder-boxes several years ago - never looked back, although I still have a rarely used lateral filing cabinet with about 50-100 hanging files...haven't bothered to migrate the archives to the prolific blue folder-boxes.
In the UK I did the same thing. I switched to concertina files (similar to the blue ones but bigger. BTW N/A in China) and then put these files in the filing cabinet.
By using the blue file boxes, with multiple dividers in them, you can probably increase the amount of documents you can store in a filing cabinet threefold.
I have the opposite problem, I have (narrow) hanging files which I brought from the US, but can't find any place that sells narrow filing cabinets?

You're in "luck". Kunming has an endless supply of "artisans" who can custom craft your wood cabinet - just be prepared for some eccentricities such as non-aligned "custom" draws, teetering base, etc as they will definitely use cheap incredibly crappy materials here and there...if you're not watching. If you want nice/good - you'll have to spec it and verify the various components actually went in (aka learn the art of armchair cabinetry yourself).

I believe the firm that sold me the "wider" filing cabinet also offers more narrow ones, but I am NOT sure. Here is its contacts:
