I have searched local vegetable markets, Parkson, Wal-Mart & Metro but cannot find "brown" or "white" onions. They all sell only "red" onions. I believe a dish I ordered in a Chinese restaurant shortly after my arrival in Kunming did use brown onion as one of the ingredients. Does anyone out there knows where I can buy brown or white onions in Kunming? I'd appreciate any advice on the aforementioned.

I heard from a reliable source, after asking the same question, that there is a veg. market where they can be got. My knowledge of the street names is next to nonexistent but I will describe its location. At the west end of the street which the French Cafe', Prague Cafe etc. are on, across Jianshe Lu but before it hits the traffic interchange.

White onions can be found at Metro, pretty cheap, too. Not always, though...

I have bought brown skinned onions at most of the larger, open air/outside vegetable markets. There is a huge one close to intersection of Xinwen and Huan Cheng Xi Lu. Though last time I was there about 3 weeks ago, building tear down was starting not a block away.

There is also a good sized market in north on LinYu, that I frequent weekly that has the largest and best browns I have ever seen!

I just bought some yesterday, at the place that I believe hslaaa was talking about. I think that section of street is called Long Xiang Jie. If you are walking toward the big traffic interchange from the corner of Dong Feng Xi Lu and Wen Lin Jie, the market is on your right, past the big noodle restaurant on the corner (diagonally opposite from movie theater). The entrance is set back from the street, up a set of concrete stairs. The stall directly in front of you when you walk in was selling them. Good luck!

Smillz is right, it's Longxiang Jie. The entrance to the market is just on the uphill side from Robert's Chinese school (www.gokunming.com/en/listings/item/rob_263/). Go down the alley and up the staircase in front of you.
