Just walk around the city when you get here and talk to other expats and you should be able to find an apartment within a week or two unless you have too high standards.

Walk around the area you wish to live in and sometimes there will be postings (in Chinese) for rooms/apartments to let. You can also go through the real estate agents (zhongjie), but you'll have to pay an agent's fee if you take the apartment through them.
