I agree western food is too expensive in Kunming and also other cities in China so I opened a small place on Haitun Lu called Dizzy Panda. We sell some of the best western food in Kunming and have a good range of beers all sold very cheaply but our customers are Chinese students from the universities near us. If you want to see some very fair prices, pay us a visit.
@ Geezer: the following is the question I was referring to:
"'anyway the maximation of profit isn't the only goal?'
"Is this a question?"
Yes.
The thread title is an inquiry, and it's been a good discussion. 'Too expensive' is indeed subjective. I understand my present choices, and don't mean to be whining and bitching - just raising questions as to the subjective impressions of others. Yes, I frequent some Western-run places in Kunming and will continue to do so.
@Nathan1980: Good for you!
An American guy ran an American style sub and burger joint across the street from Beijing Normal University called The Tube Station. Same formula: good quality and low prices for real American food.
I would take the bus there to get a really good meatball sub. Place was usually full of Chinese students and I rarely saw a westerner in the place.
You should get listed on GoK. I think the price is right.
@Geezer Already in the listings section of Gokunming but because our main customers are Chinese and our profit margins are low we don't advertise on here. You can see reviews of what we are doing in the listings section though.
The great GoK search function let me down. I cut and pasted I inadvertently pasted "Dizzy Panda." and the unnecessary period produced a no reviews result.
Looks like you got a winner there. Good for you! Lots of success!
I don't think so xiefei.
They are making the margins.
Employees are cheap like 100 a day, rent is also not that expensive and buying all the restaurant equipment in this country is so so cheap.
There is no reason, except greed, to mark up things ridiculously high which is what most restaurants do.
I wonder what the natives think though - are they too expensive, how often do they go, and why do they go when they go?
We rarely specifically want to go to foreign run restaurants and rather go to more upscale Chinese establishments.
They offer more nice surprises, because if we went for foreign food, it would probably something distinctively foreign like pizza, spaghetti or texmex, which we can just as well make at home to our own liking.
Except kebab - I wouldn't give a damn about location, I'd walk to Chenggong for a decent doner.
I've been to Pizza Hut Once or twice in the last ten years and those times or whenever I pass one, I can't help but notice that they are always packed, people waiting for tables.
But most natives know nothing about good Western food.
If western owned places are so expensive, then why are the owners whizzing around on ebikes or driving mianbaoche? Where local restaurant owners drive Mercedes.
I don't know but I'd say it's because they are smart.
Do you know many or any foreigners driving big expensive cars?
I don't.
Because we know better.
Do you know any Chinese driving expensive cars they cannot afford just so they can look rich? I do.
The same Chinese who wouldn't even dare buy a used car because they have little knowledge of car ownership and living within their means.
